With the driver refusing to stop, I was once led on a five-mile car pursuit through busy city streets at 20 MPH over standard speeds. I realized they were trying to go there quickly, not trying to elude me, because of the direction they were traveling. Finally, the motorist, a middle-aged lady, came to a complete stop in front of a house where an ambulance was waiting. The woman leaped from her car and dashed to the house's security-barred windows and doors to unlock the entrance and let the medics in. She barged inside the house ahead of the EMTs, clearly looking for the resident.
As the paramedics announced her mother's death, I entered behind them to give aid and found myself playing the role of comforter to the woman. The woman had a nervous breakdown, and I ended up holding her for more than a half hour while she wept herself to sleep until her husband came. Between cries, she tried to apologize for her driving behavior, but I informed her that I would have done the same and that she wouldn't be getting a ticket from me that day. Sometimes traffic laws are simply inapplicable.
