A vehicle for expressing hope

THE local art scene has exploded in its post-pandemic resurgence with many artists finding inspiration during the long lockdown experienced in the country. For the 20th edition of its “Of Art and Wine” art exhibit, Conrad Manila is featuring former hotelier and public relations professional Michael Anthony Sagaran with his collection “Moving Forward”.
“Our commitment in championing local artists and artistry continues as the world heals and recovers as one from the many challenges of the recent years,” hotel general manager Linda Pecoraro shared. “this exhibit, aptly titled ‘Moving Forward’ embodies Conrad Manila’s optimistic outlook in sharing the light and warmth of hospitality with our guests, complemented by inspired touches of luxury,” she added.
Sagaran is no stranger to painting, having been a Shell National Arts Competition finalist and University of Santo Tomas Fine Arts graduate, but for quite some time, his life revolved around a field that was far removed from the arts, having worked in the tourism and hotel industry for many years.
It was in 2018 when he decided to return to his brushes during his stint in Taal Vista Hotel. Living in close proximity with nature, away from the hustle and bustle of metro living, and the loneliness from being away from family and friends became the catalysts that got him back to painting. The results were the Vespa History Series and the Mercedes-Benz S: History series that were warmly received by art and auto enthusiasts alike.
For Moving Forward, Sagaran will be exhibiting 20 pieces featuring vehicles that made a mark in history and culture. These include the Ferrari Testarrosa, a cultural icon of the 80s’, the Lamborghini 350 GT, the first production vehicle of the supercar brand, and the 1955 Sarao Jeepney, the first Jeepney which has now become the King of the Road in the Philippines, to name a few.
Sagaran’s personal favorite is the Ford Model T. “This was the car that started it all. The Ford Model T was the first car which used assembly line production and the first mass-produced car for the public. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that this car marked the birth of the automotive industry,” he shared.
“It is a testament to a period where challenges were rife. There were a lot of prototypes that failed but Mr. Ford just kept on moving forward. It’s that history in combination with all these memories, a combination of remaining steadfast and a vision of a good future. That we are moving forward to a better future,” Sagaran added.
“Moving Forward” will be on display at Conrad Manila’s Gallery C until October 22, 2022.
