I challenge you to find a more perfect opening sequence, for excitement, cheekiness, anticipation, friendly goofy acceptance and welcoming spirit, and total embodiment in thirty seconds of everything about an era’s pop culture that was trying hard to forget Watergate and Vietnam and assassinations and riots and strife.
Was it propaganda and fantasy? Knowing how to have a good time, in the spirit of an era that was about to spawn disco and Studio 54 in a joyful interlude of queer freedom and unselfconscious cocaine, before Reagan, before AIDS, before what I think of as the 1980s start of our current era.
