Do you love survival games? Do you love first person shooters? Then Rust is the perfect game for you, if you have the patience that is, skill, and/or friends to play with. Before we get into my first impressions of the game, let’s go over a quick description of Rust alongside some of it’s core mechanics.
Rust is a popular multiplayer survival video game developed by Facepunch Studios. In the game, players find themselves on a mysterious post-apocalyptic island where they must gather resources, craft tools and weapons, and fend off both environmental hazards and other players. The primary objective is to survive, but the game offers no set goals or missions, leaving players free to approach their survival how they see fit. Trust, alliances, and treachery are all part of the experience as players form groups or decide to go it alone, all the while contending with hunger, thirst, and external threats.
Set in a vast open world, the environment is both an ally and an enemy, with players needing to build shelters to protect themselves from wildlife, the elements, and other players. Rust is notorious for its challenging player interactions, as the game promotes a high-risk, high-reward dynamic where trust can be a double-edged sword. PvP combat, raiding, and base building are core components, making strategy, teamwork, and resource management crucial for success.
First things first, Rust is very hard, especially if you’re playing alone. It’s a mainly player verse player game, so if you’re not ok with that don’t bother. Other more experienced players always team up together forming large clans that will make quick work of any solo player, especially those who aren’t prepared.
Gameplay:
I played Rust on the Xbox S and I have to say it runs really smooth. I rarely get FPS lag. The gunplay and combat in the game is also very satisfying. Hearing that headshot sound will make any player feel content, especially if the player you killed has lots of loot.
One complaint I had was with the default settings. They don’t feel the best and had to be readjusted for optimal performance. If you’re playing console Rust, I 100% suggest researching better settings and putting them in place.
As for the gameplay itself and what you’re doing, it’s fun. Nothing feels like a chore, as to gather resources you’ll need to leave the safety of your base (assuming you have one) and you’re certain to come across other players in the wilderness.
Graphics:
Rust graphics aren’t the best, at least on console. On PC they’re much better, like significantly. But I understand why the graphics for the console edition took a hit. The game was developed for both new and old generation consoles, and old generation consoles cannot handle Rust graphics at their full potential.
I can’t complain though, the game looks alright. And remember the focus of the game isn’t to look good, it’s to be fun to play. And Rust is definitely fun to play, when you know what you’re doing.
Community:
Alright. The Rust community is very toxic. Sure you’ll come across some nice folk, but for the most part expect to be shot on sight, raided without mercy, called and messaged horrible names, the list goes on.
If you’re going to play Rust I suggest bringing a few friends. Rust is cross platform on console, so you can play with people whether they’re on Xbox or PlayStation.
That’s the end of my first impressions. Thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day, remember to leave criticism and opinions in the comments!
