[Retro Game] Feudal... A Game of Siege and Conquest

in games •  7 years ago

Feudal

It's chess and battleship and Strageto and risk all in one game... sort of. Really. it's a bunch of plastic medieval warriors beating each other up to try to take the castle.

The map has mountains, rough terrain and field. Mountains are impassable, no horses on rough terrain and free movement on the field.

To learn the details of the game, check out the Wiki.

There are 8 different pieces, each with their own movement. There are not strengths, if you attack, you win. It's all about the strategy of using the unique movement of each unit and the terrain.

The King

The king can move one space in any direction. Like chess, you must protect the king. If you loose the king, prince duke and knight, you loose!

The Prince, Duke and Knight

The Prince

The Duke

The Knight

All three of these units can move unlimited number of spaces per turn, but cannot cross mountains or rough terrain. Lose these three units plus the king, game over you loose.

The Archer

Moves three spaces, but not diagonally. Attacks any unit within 3 spaces away.

The Sergeant

Moves 12 spaces diagonally only (!) or one space forward, back, left or right. Can cross rough terrain.

The Pikeman

Moves 12 spaces forward, back, left or right or one space diagonally. Can cross rough terrain.

The Squire

Moves 1 space horizontally or vertically followed by 1 space diagonally. Like the knight in chess.

When was this game first made? Looks like it was retro when retro wasn't retro.

I'll borrow from Wikipedia:

Feudal was originally published by 3M in 1967 as part of its bookshelf game series and later reissued by 3M in 1969 and 1973. It was reissued in 1976 and 1981 by Avalon Hill. A new German edition was issued in 1979 by Schmidt International, though the first German edition was issued by 3M in 1967.
