Sunless Sea

I recently started playing Sunless Sea, and I think it's one of the most amazing games I have ever tried. It's on par with Portal, although it is a completely different genre.

Sunless Sea is a bit hard to describe. It's an exploration game with elements of role-playing. Resource management is critical to survival. There are opportunities to combat pirates and sea monsters. But it is chiefly a game about discovering stories.

When you choose a character background for your sea captain, you get a quest for that captain. If you survive, you win! Good luck surviving, though...

You can also pursue missions of various kinds, discover mysteries in strange ports of call, and encounter spooky occurrences as your crew descends into a Lovecraftian madness. There are many forces at work in the Sunless Sea, and they range from malign to malevolent.

Yes, I know the words are synonyms.

But the world is also beautifully designed, and there is an atmospheric soundtrack that alternately offsets and harmonizes with the gothic horror. The artwork is superb. Everything about the world feels right even though everything in its alternate history went very wrong.

This game probably won't appeal to anyone who plays only fast-paced first-person shooters, but it's great for those who play role-playing games, real-time strategy games, world-building games, or other deep games with lots of opportunity to experiment. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Sort Order:

It is a slow game with a very good immersion, its level of difficulty is ideal for those who like this genre, I got it from a mystery key on the HRK page, it cost me practically 2 USD (cheap) two years ago, have it in the library of my Steem, but I never finished it, at that time my English level was low (not that I have a very high level right now) and the game was not in Spanish (my mother tongue), the game has a lot of text and agreement with Steem I play it in total 7 hours, I remember that at the end of the game sessions I ended up with my head about to explode because apart from the relatively high difficulty that the game has, at that moment I had to translate the texts in my head to know what was happening. I ended up getting bored, I think that the niche market of this genre is very small even for those who speak English, therefore, they never translated it into Spanish.

I do not think I have the right to speak well or badly about this game because I never finished it, but surely for lovers of the genre it's a fantastic game.

It is incredibly immersive, but yes, the language hurdle would be big since it is so heavily text-based. And it is not easy. I think I'm on my 4th captain now in my first playthrough and am nowhere close to completing even basic exploration of the map. It is not exactly forgiving.

I've skipped over this game in past since I just did not like the graphics. It looks alright just not my kind of thing. I do love deeper games when it comes more to crafting then story. Looks interesting from the gameplay I hope you have a blast.

Upvote & resteem buddy.

It's on Steam, GOG, and other game distribution platforms. I think it's on the Apple store for iPad, too. But it is not a multi-player game.
