What I learned about Spunkee Monkee, and why it matters

in games •  5 years ago  (edited)

I'm at the Block Party in Cripple Creek Colorado with a bunch of truly awesome Steemians. I will write other posts about my experiences here. We've had some awesome sessions, led by people who have great information to share. (See my Actifit post from yesterday for info on some of our activities.) There is always a lot to learn!

About the Spunkee Monkee project

IMG_5285.JPG

This post is about @spunkeemonkee, a really great initiative, run by the venerable @dreemsteem, who is pictured above dressed as a pirate, the Spunkee Monkee theme. Here at the Block Party, we got a really fun intro to the project, complete with a treasure hunt activity. The idea behind Spunkee Monkee is to help families work together to promote awesome choices and behaviors, while having fun. How cool is that?

The kids who participate (Monkees) get encouragement from their families while earning points for all kinds of great stuff, from learning new things to taking care of their health to doing service, thinking about their future and career, and caring for the environment. And they get points, which incentivizes them and keeps them engaged in the program.

I love everything about this idea, and I think it has an amazing future. First, @dreemsteem has the heart and the drive to make it work. And second, I think it is needed. Kids need fun and activity, and this project offers it, in a way that also supports giving and caring, and personal enrichment. They can learn about service without it feeling like a chore. Just doing something nice like helping mom or dad clear the dinner table is service. It's totally unintimidating!

Why it matters and what you should do

I think this matters because it's just such a great way to incentivize kids to choose well, and care for themselves, others and the environment. I won't write a diatribe about what is wrong with this world, because I think there's a lot that is awesome. But I do think that we all need to re-center, stop focusing on divisiveness, find ways to make a difference -- no matter how small -- and look beyond ourselves and whatever immediate challenges we are experiencing. In this big wide world, there is a lot to be fearful of, and a lot that can make life feel challenging. But if we care about something other than ourselves, we can all help to make the world a better place.

Here's how to learn more and help:

  1. Check out www.spunkeemonkee.com.
  2. Leave a comment on any of @dreemsteem's posts, and start the conversation!
  3. Contribute to the Spunkee Monkee Fundition campaign -- click the image below.

  4. Donate to the Spunkee Monkee summer contest. How? Contact @dreemsteem! (To learn about the contest, click the image below.)

The programs run periodically, so if you have a family and want to get involved, be sure to follow both @spunkeemonkee (which takes a hiatus between programs) and @dreemsteem to get notifications of the next program.

As a former long-time Girl Scout leader, I love to see projects and initiatives that support community, health, well-being and service. Great job, @dreemsteem! I hope your project grows and prospers beyond your wildest imagination. I really think it stands to make a difference.

I totally agree, @dreemsteem made a great presentation, kept things fun for all of us, and I think the program has a great future ahead of it, on the Steem blockchain and beyond.

Go @spunkeemonkee!!!

Thanks so much @crescendoofpeace!!!! I'm glad you all had fun!!! We always want to learn and grow with a smile on our face and a giggle in our chest! Hehehe

A great idea and a great way to get kids on to the Internet - constructively - and on to the block chain.

True, there are many different ways in which the project will have a positive impact!

I was part of it the test in Jan...
I learnt something about my kid... that he has a sense of humour...
How crazy right?
I also learnt that I stress him out
It was a great experience

And you are right
If anyone can pull it off, it is Captain Dreemie @dreemsteem <33

What a great story. It sounds like you learned as much as your child did, @kaerpediem. Very cool!

Yes I did
:)

Hehehhee yep!!!! And one a Monkee fam, always a Monkee fam!!!

I loved that you learned more about him as an individual!!! Sometime that happens in families right? We blend well together so we don't know where one ends and the other begins! So cool that you were able to see him stand out a bit and get to see more of him that you didn't know was there!!! :)

And thank you!!! I'm certainly trying hehehe

Hello from another former Girl Scout leader! I can see why you love the Spunkee Monkee initiative - I've seen the name come up on Twitter, but I hadn't really looked into it before now. Thanks for all the info @jayna, and I will definitely be taking a longer peek at this program in the near future.

It’s going to be an exciting project to watch! I’m so excited that @dreemsteem has created this program. She is brilliant!

It is wonderful to see initiatives to help families. :)

Yes, I think this is such an exciting development!

I agree. I’m sure people have varying reasons to be here, but that is a very good one!

I hope your project grows and prospers beyond your wildest imagination

Let’s make it happen

I’ll be contributing/collaborating

Two thumbs up, @nathanmars. It takes a village. @dreemsteem’s village will make all the difference as she grows the program to serve more kids!

Anything we can do to mold today's kids to have respect for their elders and authority is ok by me! 👏

This does sound like an awesome initiative to get good habits in to kids. Nice one :)

I definitely think so! Can’t wait to see how far it flies.

Ha, can't help but think of "fly my monkeys, fly" from the Simpsons now 😁

That's nice

What a great initiative to push towards the right way of living. This is such an amazing way to teach and usher them into their adult life. As a former leader in Scouts, I applaud this kind of effort and can only see positives coming from it!

And it is true! You would be amazed what you learn about your own kids!

Good luck with it !!

I agree @jayna, everything we can do to positively impact our kids desire to give back at an early age is fantastic! With the huge internet and gaming influence something like @spunkemonke is great!!! Sounds like you had a wonderful time together!
