I love video games and gaming. Always have. But there's a problem in gaming, and it feels like it's been going on for some time now.
The video game industry is a billion dollar one. It's experienced innovation after innovation, and these changes have contributed real entertainment value.
However, one must confess that most of the advances in video games have been on the hardware side. the software side (i.e. game design) still on the whole leaves much to be desired, especially when we look at triple A games.
Much like the Movie industry, the gaming industry has sort of become all about making a buck. Not entirely, but to a large degree (especially from the triple A publishers - there have been some really cool things happening on the indie scene).
We see the same trite things, changed only very slightly, delivered to us for the same price or more year after year. I mean just look at the Assassin's Creed franchise. Just. Fucking. Look. At. It.
My ideal game is something new, something I haven't seen before. It doesn't have to reinvent the wheel. I think a lot is possible even with the tools already available. It could a hell of a lot of fun, or a work of art, or anything in between.
But, yes, I especially want to see software changes. I want npc's to feel more real in the game world. I don't mean that each one has to act convincingly like a person, just that creatures and people within a game world should be more than just a cardboard cut out with a text-bubble/speaker attached.
Xenoblade Chronicles implemented a simple relationship system where you could see how accomplishing in world quests affected people's relationships with each other, and how fighting together affected members of the party's relationships with each other. Genius. Simple to implement. Is it really so much to ask? Apparently so.
Also, there should be consequences within the game world that the games can see and really feel. The most disappointing part of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was when you beat Ganon and go back to Hyrule, anxious to see if anything has changed. It hasn't. Especially upsetting was that the Zora's domain was still royally fucked over with ice. It was sort of a womp-womp ending to one of the greatest games of all time.
So what's my ideal game? It's one that takes risks, that moves the industry forward by saying 'look, this is what's possible.'
It's time for the gaming industry to stop playing it safe, and start rocking worlds. That's just this gamer's opinion.

Games are a billion dollar industry man. Just like movies they now take over a year and hundreds of people to make them. The guy or guys funding them want to see a return on their investment, so they darn well better produce!
Having said that, as a Dad I play fewer and fewer games, but some of the VR stuff looks sooo cool. I might buy the Star Wars VR for my "girls" (i mean myself) lol.

I understand that, man. My point is, by oversaturating the industry with the 'sure thing' approach, they are actually hurting the industry and losing money.
But yeah, the VR I've demoed is so incredibly awesome. You'll have your mind blown.

Fire Emblem has a system sort of like this, but perhaps not as advanced as you want. Characters can develop relationships together (even getting married), and when they do it effects their stats. Characters who have good relationships work better together, and offer better in battle support. It's pretty neat actually. It's one of my favorite game franchises.

Fire Emblem is one of those franchises that I keep meaning to get into... I always feel like I've missed the boat with it. But whenever I see a commercial or review for a game in the franchise I always say, 'Yeah, I want to play that!'
Didn't know that the characters could marry, though. I'll have to revisit that series, for sure.

Fire Emblem Awakening is my favorite one for Nintendo 3DS, but I've also played on Gameboy Advance and Gamecube.

I hear what you're saying, but I intensely disagree. It IS the industry's fault.
I'm much the same way the space industry dragged it's heels with excuses until SpaceX came around or corporations shrug their shoulders and claim to not be able to pay hourly employees a fair wage, this has nothing to do with capabilities and everything to do with wanting to make a buck.
The irony is that SpaceX is kicking ass and companies that pay their employees well and don't with them to death are doing better than the rest... So I'm fact, taking risks and experimenting with new approaches is usually GREAT for the bottom line in the long run.
I'm well aware of the indie game scene, lol, and this is where much of the innovation is happening. But I want to see more of it from triple A studios. These are the companies with the resources to really create something very special with far reaching impact.
I think the conventional wisdom of 'people like what they know' is super condescending and an excuse. People don't know what they like, but show them something worthwhile and they'll rally behind it.
Even taking things that are harder to change, like conventional controller mechanisms, into account, there still way too much room for change and innovation on the software end.
Companies need to remember what their job is: bringing us excellent, NEW, games, not the same insultingly repackaged bullshit with updated graphics.

I don't mean to be condescending, but there's a reason they keep making more of the same - people buy it. A lot. Innovation and experimentation require courage. It's a risk. They rather do what's safe and release yet another FPS with a shitty plot that'll bring a positive ROI.

I feel ya. I once heard something that really made me think: often, when people disagree they're right about things on different levels. I think we actually she with agree with each other...
I know I got intense, but games are something I feel pretty passionate about. I think the industry is mired in tradition and it's wide open for someone to make major improvements.
Basically out arguments are not only not mutually exclusive, they support each other, haha.

My boyfriend @poet is a hobbyist game developer. He would probably have more insight.
I used to be more passionate about gaming, but then adulthood kinda happened while I was busy playing house in Skyrim...
