Game Review Saturdays - An Honest Review of ARK: Survival Evolved

Normally this is exactly the sort of game I'd recommend because hey, it's a game about dinosaurs. Taming, riding, fighting and killing dinosaurs. And not just the scaly kind either, there's plenty of mammals like the jerboas in the list and even some fantasy creatures like wyverns!

Sadly, the game developers are crap. I'm not usually one to speak ill of game devs because I get they work hard and I haven't been in their shoes so it's hard to judge. But all these guys have been doing seems counter-productive to the makings of a good game. They left it in Early Access for far too long, gave it full release out of Early Access long before it was ready, and have been pulling some stunts with customer support and a lot of claims of people looking for such support being ignored.

On top of that, when major updates come out such as new DLC's or big patches they literally take months to put out the dev kit that is essential for mod makers to get and keep their mods up to date. When both the Extinction Core and Aberration expansions were released the game was broken in so many ways and it's been a fight to get the game devs to fix anything, let alone in a timely manner.

Plus the game is crazy unoptimized. Several people I know, myself included, have computers built for gaming that have a hard time handling this game on anything beyond medium settings even though when you boot it up for the first time it defaults to epic and you need to change it or else you're in for a giant lag fest.

I like ARK. I played a good amount of it with my roommate and I feel like it had the potential to be really great. But the game devs are clearly unable to handle such a game and are money-grabbing. The game was $60 nearly two years ago when my roommate bought it, and it's still that same price now that doesn't even include the pair of DLC's, it's ridiculous for a game to expect that price so long after release.

If you're at all interested, the game is on Steam, but it's still an expensive purchase that has mixed reviews you can read for yourself to decide if it's worth your money. But personally I'd say don't bother.
