Produce faster than your opponent. Make SCV’s constantly make sure your production buildings, i.e. Barracks, Factory and Starports, are always producing.
Even at the higher levels players often neglect this aspect while in battle you’ll be able to support your production with a decent economy if you pay attention to this.
You’ll start out with 12 workers. This makes the beginning of each game quicker, you’ll need to expand early. Some players will be aiming to add their 3rd base around the 4 to 5 minute mark.
