re: What games did you play this weekend?

Well @enjar, I think I can spare an hour or so to write up my answer, I have monsters to kill, trains to organise, and trophies to win though - busy, busy...

I have half been working on an analysis post to gauge engagement via application. That has take a back seat (on the bench) though as I've been gaming - which by the way, is the short way of saying, 'hiding from the real world'. I've been doing this on and off since I was about 7. A 48k Spectrum with rubber keys and a separate tape deck started it off, and then the upgrade to the 128k, an Amiga 500 and 1200, a Super NES, and finally a PC. Yes, I've not owned a console since I was at high school.

So today it's PC or nothing, unless you count a bit of Words With Friends on the phone. And what games am I playing? Old ones!

Football Manager 2012

Yeah I know it's almost 2019, but who gives a shit, the game is pretty much the same as the original release in 2005. The original dates back to the late nineties under the name Championship Manager, and the wiki mentions 'takeover' and 'Sega', right.......

I'm playing the 2012 version, which means I can go back to when Manchester United were good and winning trophies left, right, and center. However, in these games I like starting from the bottom, building from scratch, and then standing back and admiring (or not), 500 hours later. This time around I started the game with my home town club, Macclesfield Town. No money, no players, a small ground, and a small ground that hardly any fans come to visit.

No worries though, after 7 seasons in charge, I've managed to reach the top division and win the League Cup. This season I'll be looking for a top 6 finish, and maybe even the England job.

My profile below is an output of the decisions I've made on and off the field for the past 7 seasons. Press conferences are pointless for the most part, and so I let my assistant waste his time attending those. I'm currently paid over 30 times more than I was back at the start of the game, not a bad rise in weekly pay in 7 years.

The club are pretty happy with finances, but they aren't happy with me selling players. Make your minds up lads?

To be fair though, they have succumbed to my requests to update the infrastructure and facilities. When this next upgrade is complete, The Moss Rose will have a 16000 all-seater stadium - probably about half the size of what's required for the top division. Luckily, the TV deal earns the clubs in the top division a shitload, enough for players, wages, and fancy requests, like under-soil heating.

Oh yes, did I mention that you have to pick 11 players to play a football match? This game reminds me of my childhood, can still engross me for weeks, and should be labelled with warns for addiction. I have a friend who was too engrossed to pass the 2nd year at University - oops!

Railroad Tycoon 2: Platinum

This game is older than the above and has been with me and my Steam account for over a decade. Another simulation/strategy with shit graphics - that's how I like them!

Steam tells me I've only played 245 hours on this one, CM 2012 states 450....

So what do you do? Well, you lay track, buy trains, move goods and people, and dabble in the stock market, if the scenario/objectives permit. I'd say that a fair amount of my geography knowledge comes from playing this game for 20 years or so. I can tell you that the fastest way to get to one side of the Alps to the other is to go north, unless you have a lot of cash and can afford to slap a tunnel straight through.

Got 15 minutes, I bet you haven't! But just in case you want to get a feel for this classic, here's a walk-through on the first level of the classic campaign.

Once you know the controls, what you need at each station as far as hotels, etc, and what is good to take where to be used/turned into something else, you are pretty much set. And then comes the difficultly level. -20% revenue for human players, +20 for the computer....... that's pretty tough going, especially with 7/8 computer opponents on the same map.

(This time around, which is probably the 5/6th) I am currently stuck on a level set in Germany called 'when the walls come down'. You get a brief history lesson at the start of each map - no prizes for guessing what this scenario based around.

Those are just two of the games I've been playing this weekend. Both are about as presentable in a post as each other - neither should be presented :) They are my go-to games though when: the weather is cold, I have no cash, and there's no-one hang out with. I guess i'll be seeing more of both of them over the next few months.

I've also been playing @steemmonsters, and Elite 2: Dangerous, but I think I'll save those for another day.

Right, back to my football team, I really need a new defender and think I might need to get the wallet out...

Cheers!

Asher

Oh, man. Football Manager 2012. This brings back so many memories. I think I must have spent 100s oh hours playing that thing. FM is such an addicting game.

You most likely have, and it certainly is! :D

Talk about dedication and consistency! Not surprised though... I am lucky if I can keep playing Steem Monsters as my consoles collect dust on the corner of my desk... I hope for more games here on Steem to get me motivated for some entertainment!

:)

Addictive personality and stubbornness to beat the computer!

I'm 101% sure there will be more games soon ;)

Words with friends. Huh...

Actually I think I may have uninstalled it recently to free up some space on my old brick! Have you played?

I haven’t in years. I used to all the time and then just got a bit tired of it. But your mention reinsured me to download it last night. I figured what the hell. With your unique username here, I figured I’d try to see if it worked there and it did. Lol. So you have a pending request if you ever reinstall it. Lol

That’s right. Your dinosaur of a phone. Upgrade that ancient shit already so you don’t have to carry a car battery with you everywhere.

Ooooh! Railroad Tycoon, I believe that was my all time favorite game ever! I even bought Railroad Tycoon II for Linux back in the days ... that was one of the first games ever released at the Linux platform. There was one thing I really missed in Railroad Tycoon II though, the possibility to build tunnels.

I was really into Roller Coaster Tycoon when I was younger. Had a blast trying find ways to overcharge people and build unsafe roller coasters! Never really cared much for whatever goals the game had set out for me.

Railroad tycoon does look quite fun. I've yet to play any of those.

I belive the roller coaster came later. I believe Railroad Tycoon II came out maybe around 1995, and Railroad Tycoon maybe 1990. I never tried the roller coaster Tycoon.

Railroad Tycoon was great when it was released, but I'm a bit afraid trying out old games, they often does not live up to the good old memories. Now that I have a family and a job and a boat and lots of other things going on, I rarely have time for gaming.

Nice! It's in my top 5 for sure, especially on hours spent playing.

Tunnels were a bit of a cheat though eh? Surely you shouldn't be allowed to tunnel the Alps! :D

Haha I’ve been slowly getting back into gaming too
Never played those games before though.
I’ve been a Nintendo / Xbox console guy and I recently got the new Pokémon for the switch (which is a replica of the old school game boy version).. decided to start posting DTube videos so it doesn’t seem like such a waste of time

That's cause you aren't an old git like me! :D

Damn consoles, the pads used to give me blisters - I can blame StreetFighter 2 for that. I would go with dTube too, if my games weren't so visually unappealing!

I like a lot of those older games. I even bought Age of Empires HD on Steam so I could relive the memories. Sometimes the keep their entertainment value for many years. No reason to pay for a new version when the old one is still good.

I’ve just been giving Old School RuneScape a try. I’ve never played any of its version to any real length of time. I do love the older games they tend to have everything worked out, tons of content, and are no longer a “flavor of the month” game where people are rushing in to play for a month before they move off to another game.

For sure :)

Steam is great, I would have lost/sold/left behind these games if they weren't stored in the cloud for me. There is no point paying for new player names as with Football Manager, by the time you've reached the top division the players you have heard of have all retired anyway :)

Very nice I’ve only run across one other post of someone playing Football Manger they were quite passionate and involved in that game as well. They were enjoying the 2018 version. From my own experience I tend to enjoy the older versions when a game comes out almost early with a new edition. Most of the time the year to year upgrades are not very noticeable. Glad to see you are playing one where you have a team you like doing well for that year.

Good luck in getting that under soil heating. Perhaps you will get to inform a player he has been traded of for it!

I been enjoying some SM as well. Waiting for my dailies tonight to see the new changes. I’ve been hearing about them in a SM community I’m in as people been testing things out on the test server.

I can see why - these games take up a lot of time, even if you aren't going all out with every detail of managing the club. The upgrades to the game are mainly the new players and a re-jig of stats/attributes - I can get by without those.

The new battle format on SM is interesting, I'm a little sad about starting with level 1's even though it's pretty open. Good luck and happy gaming :)

I played SM ... daily quests for free packs! Can’t wait to try out the new strategic game play tonight.

That will likely happen when I'm in bed but I will certainly check it out tomorrow. Meanwhile, I cant escape bronze!

I just made it to silver .. 5 days later. Haha. Good luck have fun.

I'm looking forward to trying them out as well once my daily is up. I hear many are just trying to escape bronze for the time being. I hope in a day or two it won’t be too bad.

I can see why... the matches take forever because of waiting time! Hopefully they will optimize the flow somehow.

Only thing I played this weekend was Hallow Knight, not to much of it though. I like what I've seen so far though.

Mostly I was just catching up on Anime the last couple days.

I'm not aware of that game, probably due to old age. Cheers :D

It came out this year on Switch, the PC version was last year or something. :p

Switch you say? :D

Let me go find my slippers and reading glasses!

I've beaten my grandma in a tough game of Parcheesi.

Say what now, who's cheesy? :D

Cheesy?! It was War man; gloves off!

How long they been on for?

Nice picks, I especially love playing RTII.

This weekend my brother sent me Ultimate General: Civil War on Steam and it is freaking good. So I got semi-addicted to it, haha.

I'll probably be playing it when I'm 80. The maps are random, and there's enough maps within the campaign and individual scenarios to keep you coming back for more.

I don't know that game but it sounds like something I could waste a few weeks on :)

This is always nice to see after all these years. Based on your pictures I think I only played the first version of railroad tycoon.

Did you by any chance play one of the following games?
Red alert or command & conquer
Theme park
Colonization
Warlords
Heroes of might and magic

Red alert or command & conquer
Theme park
Colonization

Played the above and loved them, Colonization probably my favourite of the three. Add Civilization, Sim City, Populous 2, Settlers, Dune 2...... Yep, it's a wonder my eyes aren't square!

Lol 😂

I also played most of the games you mention.
Did you also play one of these games online?

I don't think i've played any of them online. We didn't have internet back then :D
