Prologue
At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Emperor Huan gave all his trust to his eunuchs and the Emperor Ling’s attendants wielded total power. Thus, chaos occurred all over the country and all the heroes started to assert their power. Among them was a man whose name was Sun Jian. He was descended from the famous strategist Sunzi or the familiar name Sun Tzu who wrote the book “The Art of War”.
Sun Jian held the post of the Governor of Changsha when he followed Cao Cao, Yuan Shao and others to subjugate Dong Zhao. Sun Jian came into possession of the Imperial Seal by chance. Unexpectedly, the Imperial Seal caused great chaos, in which Sun Jian himself died. Sun Ce, Sun Jian’s eldest son carried on the unfinished lifework of his late father. Under the pretence of avenging his father and protecting his family, Sun Ce borrowed troops from Yuan Shu and passed the Imperial Seal to Yuan Shu as a guarantee of the troop’s return.
Sun Ce then attacked Liu Yao, an imperial relation and the former prefect of Yangzhou, who had occupied Qu’e after being driven from Yangzhou by Yuan Shu. The initial battle took place at Ox Landing where Zhang Ying, a Commander in the service of Liu Yao, suffered a major defeat at the hands of Sun Ce. Then Zhou Yu, Sun Ce’s Chief Commander, took Qu’e by surprise and Liu Yao was routed.
Thus, Sun Ce was able to occupy the Wu area, south of the Great River, with help from his father’s former associates and friends. Sun Ce was courteous to the wise and respectful to the scholarly. He gathered around him many men of ability at the lower reaches of the Great River. Day by day Sun Ce became more and more powerful and finally established his land to the south of the Great River.
