Let's Make a Level for Duke Nukem 3D, Part 14

I tweaked the ceiling of the vertical shaft we worked on last time. The octagonal ring and new ceiling trim look a bit better imo:

Looks nicer with an octagonal sprite ring than a square. But I could not, for the life of me, get the rotating light cycler effect to work. All I could manage was a slow pulsating strobe like certain parts of the jump puzzle room. I may revisit this later if/when I figure that out. For now, we have to push on to the next room:

Lighting is a bit samey compared to the starting room, but at least there is lighting/shadowing present. I've had to build three rooms so far without any directional shadows to speak of, which is too many. Hopefully that will be overlooked because of the rooms that do have directional shadows in place.

Whew, that was so much copying and pasting. This is the long room with a floor covered in toxic waste that the player needs the hazard boots to cross. At the end he will find night vision goggles, and a second pair of hazard boots to make the return crossing. This may enable sequence breaking if steroids and an atomic health are used here.

There's the goal. There will be no explanation of which items are necessary to pass which areas. It should be obvious enough anyway, and part of the fun is figuring that out. "Oh I found hazard boots. Where did I see a place I can use those?" etc.

As you can see, the light is cast upward (from the glowing toxic waste) in this room instead of downward, from lighting fixtures. This results in some shadows being cast onto the ceiling, as shown.

Anyways, that's enough for this time. Next time we'll start on the pitch black room full of traps which is passable only using the night vision goggles.

This is impressive, really. Do you have professional experience?

I worked as a mapper on some total conversion teams when I was like 15. I work on games now, but as a writer.

That's news for me, and all kinds of awesome! In which games have you participated in?

I had time with out see the duke nukem post and wow you are very advanced now looks really good and almost ready to play on it. Regards

I know now what these vertical platforming you did last time remind me. It reminds me one of the Batman movies where Bane got out of the pit/prison. I have never build a platform for any game, but I can imagine how difficult it’s just by watching you going through this process. All these rooms, lights, platforms, traps... it’s just crazy. I wonder once your game platform is finished, can you actualy sell it or make a profit of it so others can use your platform for this game?

Well that's how it is the roof is? I'd rather say I want a rectangular roof instead of octagonal won, it will loot betterly amazing

Your design plans are very advance and awesome and I love the design you did on the Octagon ring. I would love to try this design on the game itself. Great skills you have and thanks for sharing this to us.

Looks like some of the detail is coming along nicely. Actually looks better than a lot of these VR games from last year! If you can add touch support that would make it awesome. Speaking of which there is a new steam vr game called "compound" that has a similar style of graphics that looks pretty cool and should be coming out within the next month or two.

This is so massive wow. It started out simple and now it is just amazing with all the detail it has. If I was trying to build something like this I would be listening to this song the whole time.

The traps in that room are going to have to be ridiculous...

Nice progress. :) I'm curious how the pulsating or rotating lights will look moving. :)

And now there are toxic floors.
The sht became real now, where you will probably die a lot of times in anger lol.
I wonder if it is possible to make a huge city with this editor.

Are you going to put some monsters and bosses later?
And then play on this map? It would be so cool!!

Nice post. i like your post to much. thanks for share the good post.

NICE
