The games which we love: UnReal World

Today, Finnish had been independent for 100 years. To celebrate this, an old classic game I've played a lot in the past, is on a special discount (and in addition 100 year party for Finland, it's been 25 years of UnReal World already! First version was released in 1992)

The game is a special roguelike game with simple graphics. It's not much about fantasy, but more about survival in the world of the past. You choose a tribe you belong to, randomize the character information and get a set of skills based on those, including carpentry, fishing, agriculture, swimming and set of weapon skills, like skill with spears or the bow.

You are set for an adventure on a randomized world. There are no actual goals in the game, but you can choose from different scenarios and pick either completely free gameplay or having a set of tasks to be completed, mostly to teach the player the basics of the game, like how to drink.

The game is however truly great as it is different in a delightful way. It's a bit complicated to get into, as all the commands are behind complicated commands (Alt + m is carpentry, choose what do you want to do with carpentry, get checked if you have required items to do the task..)

I started my first game after a long long time. After choosing to play in the Owl-tribe due to their skill with bows, I ran off to the wild, starting in the spring. There were plenty of snow on the ground and the first thing I needed to do find some water. Eating snow would seem like a good idea, but to get enough water from snow would require massive amounts of snow and I assume you would risk hypothermia, so the possibility to eat snow is actually removed from the game, even though it might seem like a grand idea.

Walking through the snow made me get tired and kept on slowing me down, every now and then causing me to be so exhausted I can't walk any further. I still couldn't find any sources of water, as I didn't find any lakes or rivers. I could simply break the ice and then drink water from the lake if I found one. I didn't even bother hunting reindeer (seen on top left in the image above).

I found a village and had high hopes they would have a simple well in the village, but I couldn't find one.

All I found was two tents, some people and a fence for the dogs. Some of the villagers gave me tips how to find a lake, so I followed their advice and continued north-west from the village.

The things which happened to me next were.. surprisingly fast. I met a group of people in the woods, demanding me to give my pants for them (not in the sexual way though) and when I disagreed with them, they attacked me. I attempted to dodge the attack, but couldn't.

The next thing I remember was waking up in unfamiliar woods, eye bleeding and I am starving and feeling I could die in thirst.

And unsurprisingly, that's exactly what happened. First of all, you can see on the image above, that I was wounded, fatigued and starving. I had no source of food or water, so the next step for the future was...

Death!

Well stuff like this happens.

The new game

I started a new game, in this new game I managed to find a lake and water straight from the start. This will be easy, that's what I thought. I had a bow and arrows with me, ready to hunt.

After finding a reliable source of water, it's hard to go wrong in any way. I met an elk in the woods and it managed to run away, but I started tracking it. All I needed to do is to follow the tracks on the ground, uncovering more of them as I follow them. Simple enough, even though I'm not sure if I would ever catch the elk in time, as I was fatigued and didn't have any skis with me.

I managed to follow the elk to a lake, I saw two sets of tracks so I assume there were more than one elk. However, I couldn't find footprints on ice, as there was no snow on the ice. I made a hole in the ice to get a drink and started to walk over the ice, in hopes to find the elks or even the tracks soon after crossing the lake.

However.. I didn't remember that it was already spring. Ice wasn't as strong as it would be in the winter. I fell quickly through the ice and due to being a horrible swimmer, I couldn't climb back up. It was only a short struggle and I drowned.

And this is why I bought the game. To die all the time for stupid reason. This is why most people don't play games. Fuck this shit
Gaming does develop your character and at best can make you handle your stress better this is why we all should only play only candy crush saga

The closest thing visually I ever played was c-evo and Roman Empire ... something.

Well then this should be easy to approach for you ;) Go ahead and try!

Do you know that c-evo release dates back on the beginning of this century?
I also like bomberman... and The Sims.
Like 1st edition.
After that, you know, my interest slowly faded...

I think C-evo was originally released already in the year 1999. But still new game compared to UnReal World, which was released 1992. Some good games still live on.

I read the additions , lol, no we don't need to die or play candy crush...
( I really don't like candy crush or anything similar...)If game is annoying , just 'customize' it....
Little dot here, one zero there, make a hell of a difference
hehehehe

An update! I started the third playthrough, met a fox and managed to get a shot hit. Now I'm following a bleeding fox through the woods, you can see a set of tracks and some blood. This is more fun than the last two playthroughs.
