Mario Tennis Aces Free Online Tournament Weekend Is Surprisingly Fun

Mario Tennis Aces comes out June 22nd, 2018 and sees Mario and a plethora of other Nintendo characters in an RPG/arcade tennis game. This weekend from June 1-3 is offering players an early free taste of Mario Tennis Aces and it is super fun.

As you can see from this screenshot I took right after activating my special ability (you have a special meter which is pictured top left) the game is full of awesome screenshot opportunities and ways to take up all of your available spare time.

I will admit I was sceptical that this was going to be fun, I almost didn't bother downloading the free tournament version because it didn't really appeal to me. Having played 30 something games in one day and only winning a few of them, I still had a lot of fun (more than I thought I would).

The online tournament allows you to battle other players and earn points, the more points you earn you unlock new characters. I am pretty bad at this game, so it took almost 20 games for me to get over 100 points to unlock Waluigi who looks weird in tennis clothing by the way.

The game features a tonne of different shots like specials, lobs, slices and pretty much any real and non-real tennis move you can think of.

I lost 10 games in a row before I ended up winning the game pictured above.

If you have ever played a Mario tennis game before including that horrendously disastrous Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash on Wii-U, this is going to be the best Mario tennis game you have played in a very long time. It's actually the best.

The demo version doesn't feature all characters, the single player, co-op or other bells and whistles. But it allows you learn the basics and it's a lot of fun. I have already pre-ordered the game even though it is $80 AUD. For playing the demo you get a Mario classic outfit in the final game.

Even if you're sceptical, give this free version a shot because it's a lot more fun than you think. Now Nintendo needs to give us a golf game just as good and we'll be cooking with gas.

I might give it a go mate.

I am not normally a Mario fan but Mario cart sucked days of life, thanks for the heads up.

Haha, well this game has already sucked days out of my weekend and I've only played it for one day. It's surprisingly difficult to get good at this game, the variety of shots and strategy make it a lot smarter than Wii tennis, that's for sure. I already have a bunch of Switch games to play, I still haven't even finished Zelda BOTW yet, although it does take hundreds of hours to finish that one.
