The Nintendo Switch is a console that keeps developers looking for more. Bandai Namco also knows the console well and brings the latest Dragon Ball adventure to this platform. How does this game compare to the version of the other platforms? You can read that and more in this Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Switch review!
In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 you crawl for the second time in the skin of a Time Patroller that you can put together. A couple of bad guys are busy completing the time so that everything goes different from what we are used to from the different Dragon Ball sagas. For example, the fight between Frieza and Goku differs from the famous Frieza saga. Cooler interferes with his most powerful form, causing Frieza to get the upper hand and crush Goku.
On the way through the Dragon Ball timeline
Thus, there are still other things that threaten to destroy the Dragon Ball universe. And so, Time Patrollers, under the leadership of the Supreme Kai, have to travel to the various events in the timeline to kick it up and make it all right. You are one of those Time Patrollers; a character that you can put together in the game.
You can choose which breed you want to be Majin, Saiyan, Earthling, Namekian or Frieza, and then adjust almost all the features to your liking. Each character has its own pros and cons in terms of power, speed and amount of life or ki. Then you can choose your basic principle. Do you like to share close and personal clap or are you more of the ki attacks like the Kamehameha? It is up to you.
Just like in the first part of Dragon Ball Xenoverse so. Only that part has never come to the Switch. And that brings some strange things to this game. Xenoverse 2 is a straightforward port from the PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One version.
Everything from the PS4 and Xbox One version
You will therefore be given the option to use your hero from the first part as Toki Tori City Hero and as an Extra Time Patroller. But you do not have that hero at all. Is that bad? Not really. There are some standard heroes available that you can use for this. It only feels a little strange.
The first part of Xenoverse is secretly taken into account in this Switch game. Via the Nintendo eShop you can download Legend Patroller missions for free. And that's basically nothing but everything from part one. You can play these missions once you finish the same saga in Part Two.
It actually adds a complete second game, which releases your piece by bit. Furthermore, Xenoverse 2 for the Switch is almost the same. Graphically, the game is almost exactly transferred and everything runs smoothly on the Switch, but only 30 frames per second, as opposed to the 60 frames in the other versions. And the hub, from which you do everything in the game, is as lively as the other version.
There are countless NPCs and trainers available and online there are a fair amount of players around. And as far as gameplay (the standard controller) is concerned, everything is literally transferred to the Switch. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 plays wonderfully smoothly, both offline and online, as we already reported in the review for the other version of the game. But this is a flaw in controlling the Joy-Con controller.
But different
Sometimes, it does not respond to the way you want it, and the right analogue stick is in the way of some actions. It occasionally leads to an unnecessary suit because you suddenly lock another AI opponent instead of flipping away.
Especially during the hard fighting and online this is frustrating, but luckily there are not too much in the game.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 feels just as easy as the other version. And that applies to both the storyline, the numerous Parallel Quests, and the many missions that can be found in the hub. But as you progress in the game, there are some challenges on occasion.
You will be challenged for fighting by known and unknown characters from a certain moment, and these battles eventually become quite difficult. This is nice for the seasoned Dragon Ball Xenoverse players, but luckily these battles are not mandatory so the game remains accessible to everyone in general. And that accessibility is much more clear in other elements.
On the way the Super Saiyan hangs out
The versions for the PS4, PC and Xbox One have already done many things well. And honestly, they do some things (especially graphically) better than the Switch version. But no version is portable. And that's why it's unique to this edition. The Switch makes it possible to kick ass wherever you want.
The missions in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 also lend themselves well to catch the Saiyan as fast as the train. They all last only a few minutes and that is of course perfect for between them. In the handheld mode, the game is at least as smooth as on your TV.
But the handheld mode is not the only exclusive that the Switch version has received. In this version, you can fight against each other via local Wi-Fi if you both have a Switch with this game. But you can also perform a Kamehameha or Spirit Bomb in your living room (in the train can also, but that's a little weird). Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 on the Switch supports motion controls through the Joy-Con controllers, which is really very cool.
Only this feature is no more than a gimmick that you will use in the beginning. You soon notice that it is nice to do those movements themselves, but it does not add much to the functional situation during one of the generally busy fighting. In fact, it often slows down and fights a fight. Still, this is a feature that is definitely fun to try.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Switch Review - A downgrade with extras
Therefore, the addition of motion controls in this version is definitely not the reason to buy the game, even though the offline multiplayer and the fact that you're on the go can play it absolutely. Even if you consider this version to be graphically just as little as the other versions, it is worth it.
At least, if you do not have the game for these consoles yet. Because besides these exclusive features, the Switch version of Xenoverse 2 does not add enough to count 55 euros for it. The game is cool, but in comparison to the PS4, PC and Xbox One version of the game, you will immediately miss something missing and you will soon be disturbed by Joy-Cons.
The plus and the drawbacks
✔ Play Dragon Ball!
✔ Multiplayer through local WiFi
✔ Also contains part 1
✖ But 30 frames per second
✖ Control is sometimes in the way
✖ Motion controls only a gimmick
Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
