Played our second session of Gloomhaven today. After mainly getting setup and learning the rules last week, today as much more fun as we got to dive right into the scenario. We still had to real clue about what sort of strategy to employ while playing so there was still a fairly large learning curve that we faced today. Everyone was still feeling out their classes and trying to find out exactly how they played.
I'm currently playing a class called the Cragheart and while his picture looks like a big nasty in your face fighter type character, he's actually very well rounded. I do have some melee focus but I also have a bunch of ranged attacks and a little bit of healing mixed in. So as much as I want to just dive in to battle, I ended up playing a bit more cautiously just because of the cards I had to play.
We lost our first scenario and quickly learned how important action economy is going to be in Gloomhaven. It is not a take your time dungeon crawler because everyone has limited resources and once you are out of resources you are out of the scenario. We learned this the hard way as we got to the final room of the encounter only to realize we had no more cards to defeat the last of the enemies. Mixed with a bit of bad luck resolving damage, we found our party defeated.
The good news is that the game wasn't over and we could simply attempt the scenario again. The second round went much smoother and we had significantly longer longevity thanks to utilizing our cards more effectively. We managed to slay all of the bandits and secure some loot.
Game has been fun so far and I already find myself looking forward to next week.
