After a lengthy hiatus my legacy group fianlly got togather and played Gloomhaven. Well one member got called into work last minute but we decided to play anyways. It's been months since we all got together and this session was way overdue.
It was quite awkward getting back into the game and we started the session going painfully slow. None of us really remembered the rules completely adn I'm pretty sure we made a few errors during the session. We kept up our crypt hunting habits from before on our quest to try and get at least one character retired so that we could finally unlock a new part of the game, something we still haven't managed yet. My character is now one scenario away from retiring so hopefully next time we will have that experience.
We were a bit rusty and had quite a few negative effects on us for todays scenario. We had a bad encounter before heading into the crypt, giving us all a curse, and then entering the crypt gave us all three more curses on top of that. Playing with four curses isn't super fun. We started off very slowly and were really having issues killing anything. Time is not your friend in Gloomhaven and wasted turns early in a scenario really come back to bite you in the ass later. As we progressed, it became very clear that we didn't have much chance of success. We had nearly completed two of the three rooms we needed to clear and one party member was dead, two were on their final turn and one was in near perfect condition. We all just assumed that this scenario was going to be a loss. Losses are quite frustrating in Gloomhaven since you have to replay the entire scenario and the scenarios have been taking us several hours to complete. We didn't quit though even after two more party members died and we were down to one last player with about half of the final room remaining. There were four living corpses remaining, creatures with high health pools and low mobility facing off against our mage. The mage proceeded to try kiting the living corpses forcing them through a little doorway where he slowly chipped away and started whittling them down. He had three of them dead with one turn remaining, a one on one situation. The mage came up clutch on the final round and dropped the living corpse to the ground. Victory!
A good end to a doomed session and I'm very glad we don't have to replay that scenario again. I'm now one step closer to retiring and should finish my quest the next time we play. Hopefully next session we get a bit more proficient at playing so we can lower the amount of time each scenario takes to run so that we can handle playing multiple scenarios each session. Looking forward to getting back to playing on a more consistent schedule and finally seeiing everything that gloomhaven has to offer.
