Apex Legends - Battle royale done right Feb 12, 2019

Respawn Entertainment, purchased by EA in December 2017, launched one of the fastest growing titles ever, Apex Legends!

Having reached over 10 million players in the first 3 days of its release along with "well over" 2 million concurrent players this past weekend, Apex Legends is the latest in the growing field of battle royale games. As the cinematic trailer shows, there is no need to cover the game play that closely as we are all quite familiar with this genre in 2019. MMOs, FPS, mobile games, and every other genre imaginable has been getting in the latest trend of battle royale, but what sets them apart is how well they execute it.

The execution of the battle royale is exactly why Apex Legends is going to stand out. Coming from a well known studio means less of the typical bugs that you might expect from smaller companies. A clean and polished release has helped pushed Apex into the spotlight, and a solid technical backing has kept it there. No major server crashes have been reported, no game breaking bugs, no dubious amount of cheating/hacks have been seen.

Sticking with the free-to-play model with an optional cosmetic cash shop also helped lower the barrier to entry as you can play for 100% free of charge. A incoming battle pass subscription will also help boost revenue while allowing the free players to spend as little as they like, and there is also an e-sports tournament coming in mid-February.

Quick stats:

10 million sign ups in the first 3 days
25 million sign ups in the first week
Most streamed game on Twitch since its release
Almost 4 times as many viewers as Fortnite as of the time of this review!
