Revulsion: Alpha First Impressions/Review

I've reviewed many games over the course of my life and played many years away, so it's a little different to go into this review. Full disclosure I know the developer and remember having the conversation with him once upon a time about developing a game while blogging it all out on steemit. I can assure you that my review won't be tainted by the fact that I know the developer or any of that. Now that we have those facts out of the way, lets get to what this post is about.

My overall impression of this game from a genre standpoint would have to be that I would call it an FPS-Rogue-light. This game is simply put, brutal as fuck. I would say that if you took the original Doom or Hexen games, added in some Darksouls, and a little bit of Rogue-Like RPG elements, it would start to crack the surface of what this game is all about. I knew it would be a shooter, but I didn't ask for any details before I started to play it. It's funny that when I told @thecastle my thoughts, his reaction was basically just "that's what I was going for."

I would say that this is an industry vets love letter to the old school FPS of the 90's and early 00's with some new school flare. The voxel graphics work out really well in my opinion and I'll show some screenshots of the first area of the game below. I am avoiding getting into the further parts of the game because I just don't want to spoil any of the surprises. It's even more impressive to me when looking at the level design that this was all done by one person over the course of a few months.

Review continued below.

One of the key elements to any good shooter is that the weapons have to feel right. No one wants to play a shooter that feels like the weapons are sluggish or not on point. I can say beyond any doubt that this game nails that. Every gun feels like the hit detection is spot on and the shotgun is just perfect. The only gun I'm not a huge fan of is probably the revolver, but I prefer accuracy over power, so that's a personal preference. The assault rifle is spot on and you can tap fire or hold down and spray fire. The rocket launchers are great for that delayed mega hit. There are even grenade launchers for those massive swarms of enemies. All in all the shooting just feels right.

I struggled a bit at the start because I was trying to play this game like it was Doom, when that isn't what it's about. Revulsion is it's own game in every sense. Once I started respecting the RPG elements, and let me make this clear, to get very far in the game you will have to respect the gear, I was able to get much more mileage out of each life. I stopped getting overpowered and it let the pure twitch skill game-play shine through. When I said this game is brutal I wasn't joking, it will not hold your hand and it will kill you a lot.

I'm going to showcase a sneak peak at the crafting and gear selection for the "RPG elements" that I was mentioning before after this last paragraph. I would say my final thoughts are that not only is this game fun, but the extreme difficulty makes it feel very rewarding to get through. I'm curious to see some of the old pros try to speed run this game, but you really can't shortcut the gear aspect. All in all I would highly encourage anyone that likes those old school, unforgiving, kick your ass shooters to give this a try. It's definitely got it's own style and Episode 1 is expected to release in December, but that is subject to change. One thing is clear, when it drops, it will wreck some faces and have many hours of joy for all the old FPS fans out there.
