Retro Review - Silent Hill 2

After the success of Silent Hill 1, it was obvious that Capcom would develop the second part of it, by surprise Silent Hill 2 turned out to be a much better game compared to the first in terms of history, graphics and psychological terror, Silent Hill 2 took aspects of the first game and perfected them in such a way that it made Silent Hill 2 one of the best Survival Horrors to date.

Today a new Retro Review of the now classic horror game: Silent Hill 2.

We are back in the cursed town, but this time we take on the role of James Sunderland, whose tragic story begins after he receives a letter from his wife who had died 3 years ago, in that letter she says that she is in that town, the town of Silent Hill, so in order to solve the mystery of that letter, James decides to travel there.

But as you may suppose, finding the wife of our protagonist is not an easy task, as we play and get deeper into the town, we will meet several characters, some will help us during our stay in the town while others just they will make life impossible for us, in the same way while we are in Silent Hill, we will know in depth the history of each of these characters, of that town and likewise the story of our protagonist, where we find out that James is not the typical hero who would be able to go after his beloved without any fear, he has a dark past and where he is guilty of a crime.

In Silent Hill 2, Pyramid Head appears for the first time, a humanoid monster that has a kind of helmet in the shape of a triangle, a monster that since its first appearance became a classic character of the game and also a representative character of Silent Hill in general.

In comparison with Silent Hill 1, in Silent Hill 2 the big change in the graphic aspect is noticeable, since we must bear in mind that the first silent hill came out for the classic Playstation 1, while Silent Hill 2 for Playstation 2, therefore the advance in graphic quality is quite large, being Silent Hill one of the first games to go out for Playstation 2, graphically is not better than games that came out years later for the same console, but even so it has a level of pretty good detail.

One aspect to highlight are the cinematics that we can observe as we are Playing Silent Hill 2, these have a level of quality quite superior to what was seen in Playstation 1, where the modeling of the characters have a better design, leaving one side polygonal models that both characterize the PS1.

The atmosphere is still the highlight of this game, with an atmosphere where terror abounds with dark and gloomy scenarios is the perfect setting for this type of games, where somehow they try to terrorize us only with psychological terror.

In the sound section as well as the graphic section, it is another aspect where it improves in great quantity to its predecessor, in Silent Hill 2 we have a soundtrack worthy of appearing in any horror movie, the instrumental level that each melody has is something worth hearing, also that they fit perfectly in that gloomy environment that holds Silent Hill, and sound effects play an important role in this game, because thanks to these adds a dose of psychological terror that stands out in this great game.

Regarding the gameplay, it is practically the same as the one we saw in Silent Hill 1 or the Resident Evil 1 and 2, we move thanks to the arrow keys, exactly the same movement of the games mentioned above, in this aspect they chose to maintain the same gameplay that made their games so popular, a type of gameplay that although it is currently a little outdated, in those days was perfect for this type of game.

We also have hand-to-hand combat against the infernal creatures that we encounter in the town and with firearms, that as in the first game, give us little ammunition, the small amount of ammunition is a common tactic in this type of games, because this is why we feel more defenseless before the situation that we have in front, so we must use wisely every bullet we spend.

You could not miss the puzzles that so desperate a few people in the first game, it should be noted that in this game I noticed the puzzles with more difficulty than in the previous game, puzzles where the most obvious solution is not always correct, therefore we must think and analyze it really to be able to stir the riddle that we have in front, each one of the puzzles is well thinking and coupled with regard to the environment and the scenarios of the game.

Silent Hill 2 is undoubtedly a game that surpassed in all aspects of its predecessor game, improving its plot in great quantity, telling us more about the things that have happened in that town, has an incredible graphic improvement, excellent modeling and scenarios with the best setting to immerse ourselves in the world of terror that this game presents, is definitely a recommended game for those people who like horror games.
