Sonic Lost World (3DS): How to be worse than the Wii U Version - Every Gamer Review

Now this won't be a proper review because I never finished it, and for good reason. Sonic Generations for the Nintendo 3DS was beyond a messy game. Sonic Lost World on the 3DS makes me hate the console version even more. And to explain why this is somehow even worse...

Sonic Lost World (ソニックロストワールド Sonikku Rosuto Wārudo) for the 3DS, developed by Dimps and published by Sega, it was released in 2013 alongside the Wii U port.

Just like Sonic Generations for the 3DS, the plot is the same as the Wii U version, in fact, Dimps took an even lazier route by just showing you the console's cutscenes in 144p, I'm serious, it's of very poor quality and it makes you question Sega's cheapness even more.

I had mixed feelings with the Wii U port...actually, I played the Steam version and I had sporadic feelings for it. There were some moments I liked but a lot of moments that I loathed, an experiment gone haywire and for that, I deem it to just simply exist.

Now that you've (hopefully) read it, then the game is more or less the same with some alterations.

You finally play as Sonic in a 3D world on a handheld and I'll give it a tick for at least doing so...although you'll still get 2.5D sections during the game so we were so close.

In terms of the controls...well its mixed. The 3D sections are decent, with the controls feeling similar to the console original. What has improved is the parkour mechanic as the instructions that don't hamper you like in the console original tell you in layman's terms of how to do it and I was able to do it without any issues and I found it to be fun when I could do it properly.

The homing attack is more simplified but it can go haywire at a drop of a hat to the point where you sometimes feel like you're losing control, and you get nervous when you're above bottomless pits.

Wisps are back but are more prevalent here than on the console original, since you can't finish levels without using them.

The graphics look similar to the console original, but they aren't impressive, even for the 3DS. Whilst Sonic's model looks good, I can't help but have some issues at times, mostly when you finish a level, bop a capsule to release some animals and he'll just stand there frozen for a short period of time, then proceeds to move again to pose, it's just jarring is all. OK, so the music is here, the bosses are here if a bit altered in places, it shouldn't be all bad right?

Now for the level design. It starts off OK, and later in the game becomes the very worst aspect of this port. It takes bloody forever to finish levels and it can get tedious real fast. And then you get the biggest problem of the game: the objectives you're forced to do. But the objectives are done in a way that can become very trial and error and the level design can be downright confusing, that includes the 2D sections where everything is trial and error and the game expects you to go around really messy courses that leave you confused.

And then Frozen Factory Zone 3, this is where the game pretty much stopped giving a shit. This can take forever to beat thanks to pushing snowballs in narrow areas, a random snowball creature that follows you around with no way of stopping it because if you touch it, you get frozen. Oh, you also have to push snowballs and put them into holes with the sentient snowball following you and can also destroy the snowball you're trying to push and get big, and it's even worse BECAUSE THE LEVEL NEVER FUCKING ENDS! Whoever thought this level was good enough needs to be kicked in the crotch. This level was so horrendous I gave up on the level and the game altogether.

OH! THE FUCKING SPECIAL STAGES! Remember how Sonic Generations' Special Stages were too easy. Well Lost World's Special Stages is fucking unforgivable. The objective of the game is to fly around and collect a set of orbs to collect the Chaos Emerald. Shouldn't be too bad right? Well guess how you control it. You can only control Sonic with the Gyroscope feature, aiming where he goes, meaning that you have to move all around, as in get up off your arse and spin around, twist your body like an autistic having a mental breakdown (a common occurance for me), and you start to question the developers on why they thought this was a good idea.

Then I think of people in wheelchairs or people who find it difficult to easily move around, hell, I'm OK and I found it a strain to play, Dimps just wanted to be fancy by using a feature not many people like in the first place so great job Dimps, you've made the worst fucking Special Stages due to a god awful and poorly thoughtout control scheme.

This is just pure crap, I'll forgive Sonic Generations for the 3DS, because out of the two ports released for the system, it's not great, but still superior. Sonic Lost World for the 3DS is just obnoxious to the nth degree, and I watched the rest of the game on YouTube and I can tell it wasn't going to get any better. If you REALLY want to play Lost World, play the console version on the Wii U or even the Steam port. But avoid the 3DS port at all costs.
