5 Things We Miss About The Old Runescape (Original-Content)

in gaming •  7 years ago

Hey guys, welcome back to another gaming review and this time it's a super old online game called Runescape. A familiar name perhaps for the most of you.

We haven't played it for years and it's still around we suppose, but here's what we miss about the old Runescape.

What is Runescape?

It's a MMORPG that was released around 2001 and based on Java. Hence, we had to update our Java client every time we wanted to play. Like other MMORPGs, there are lots of scavenging for items and PVP combat. Items were important to increase our stats, for us to defeat monsters or even other players. Needless to say, the graphics were horrendous yet it was super fun. There were many things to do as well, including fishing, woodcutting, crafting runestones, planting, hunting and so on. We stopped playing simply because our account was hacked...

Here are some of the things we miss about the game.

Looking for Big bones

Back in the day, we used to group up with our friends and go to the wilderness looking for Giants.

They dropped big bones whenever we killed them but they weren't that easy as well. We had to train and level up first to a certain level before even trying to defeat a Giant.

We wanted the big bones simply because they were pretty popular and could be sold for a pretty high price.

Catching lobsters

Lobsters are an expensive catch and we could make quite a lot of money from it, while gaining exp at the same time.

Having said that, they required a certain level of fishing skills, so naturally we had to fish a lot before we could even attempt for lobsters. Looking back, we're not sure why we spent so much time doing all of these things online!

If our memory is right, we could get other seafood along with lobsters at the fishing spot, including shrimps. Sometimes you get this, sometimes you get the other. We may stand corrected though. It's been so many years.

Dying At PVP

PVP basically means player vs player and we totally sucked at it. We can hardly recall winning against other players. That's how bad, or under-leveled we were.

In Runescape you either have melee or you can use magic via runes. We used to have the green looking armor which was pretty good but still we got killed a lot of times. Especially by those who specialize in magic.

We used to fight at this place called the Wilderness where you'll find a huge range of players with different levels. As players drop most of their items when they die, a lot of people make money here by looting. It's a great way to actually make money through PVPs if you're strong enough.

Woodcutting

For some reason, woodcutting is a huge skill in Runescape. If fishing is important, perhaps cutting down trees are crucial as well.

There are so many types of trees and of course, it requires a certain level for each type of tree. We remember yew trees being popular and many of us kept training just to be eligible to cut down yew trees. That's because the yew logs can be sold for a good amount and selling them in batches means profit.

Logs are basically used to train firemaking skills by burning them. You can also turn them into arrows or bows with a fletching skill.

Now there are more weirder trees but we stopped playing before they came about. Or perhaps only pay-to-play players had access to that..

Mining And Smithing

These two make an important combination. Mining is for getting raw ores from the ground and smithing is to turn them into plates and eventually into armor.

We remember doing mining and smithing rather often last time as we wanted to upgrade our armor, or sell them to other players.

We used to mine a lot of iron, tin and copper and they could be smelted into the respective plates, which are then used to create armors. For us free-to-play players, the highest we could go was to get a complete Rune set. Maybe that's the reason why we never won against the p2p players. Sigh. We had no money back then.

In a nutshell

Runescape was a pretty fun MMORPG despite its bad graphics and it was more fun as we had friends playing it with us. It's a shame we can't remember too much details about the game. What we can say for sure was that we still used ICQ or MSN back then while playing the game.
