Ubisoft has just announced their next release, and with a bombshell too, it’ll be out in just a week.
Atomega was developed by Reflections, a small Ubisoft studio which grew to prominence after the release of the excellent Grow Home and Grow Up.
The game will be released on Steam on September 19th and, perhaps more shocking, is only US$10, although Australian pricing has yet to be announced.

Atomega is as an eight-player battleground shooter, where the player takes the role of an ‘exoform’, described by Ubisoft as ‘super advanced post-biological lifeforms; masters of matter and energy and the last distant relative to man and machine.’, whatever that means.
You start as the nimble and tiny Atom and, via the collection of mass, seen to be strewn liberally around the map, you upgrade through eight different variations until you reach the top tier form, the Omega.
The more mass you collect, you bigger you become and the more points you score, however you also become significantly slower and more vulnerable, although I think the giant mega laser you gain in the Omega form might make that a bit of a moot point.

Mass is lost through firefights, although it’s hard to tell from the video if you just downgrade to the exoform below after taking damage or if you start from scratch with death.
It will be interesting to see what sort of meta develops in terms of staying small and nimble or going for maximum size and power.

The game will be set ‘at the very end of time where reality is rapidly dissolving’, where the last survivors of the end-times have gathered around the final star in the universe to battle it out. While this sounds awfully dark Ubisoft has described the game as having ‘a light-hearted tone’, and using ‘unusual concepts which will surprise and delight players’. Cheery.
There has been no word on a console release however given Grow Home and Grow Ups’ delayed console releases, Atomega might make its way there in the future.
