The Star Wars Battlefront 2 beta brought to light some key problems with the game’s implementation of loot boxes, one that greatly affected it’s multiplayer. After incorporating player feedback, EA have finally reworked the game’s loot box and progression system in time for release.
The Battlefront 2 beta highlighted many issues within the game’s multiplayer with the game’s loot box and progression system being the main source of frustration for many gamers.
Loot boxes would award players with a wide range of items from Star Cards of various quality, weapons and even hero cards. Albeit these items alone can’t ensure victory, it dictated how players progressed in multiplayer. Loot boxes meant random drops leading to completely random multiplayer progression.
The problem with the system is that it allowed players to speed up their progression by buying more boxes, creating an element of pay to win system. Players were vocal on their distaste for micro-transactions within a soon to be released triple AAA title.
The swarm of feedback was enough for EA to reconsider how loot boxes and the progression system work. Here’s what they’ve changed for release:
Epic Star Cards, the highest tier of Star Cards available at launch, have been removed from Crates. To help keep everyone on a level playing field, these Star Cards will primarily be available through crafting, with the exception of special Epic Star Cards available through pre-order, deluxe, and starter packs.
You’ll need to reach a certain rank to craft upgraded Star Cards. You won’t be able to buy a bunch of Crates, grind everything up into crafting materials, and immediately use them to get super powerful Star Cards. You can only upgrade the ability to craft higher tier Star Cards by ranking up through playing the game.
Weapons are locked behind specific milestones. While a select few will be found in Crates, the rest can only be attained by play. Want to unlock a new weapon for your Heavy? Play as a Heavy and you’ll gain access to the class’s new weapons.
Class-specific gear and items can be unlocked by playing as them. As you progress through your favorite class, you’ll hit milestones granting you class-specific Crates. These will include a mix of Star Cards and Crafting Parts to benefit your class’s development.
EA emphasizes that they will continue to update and improve this system. Hopefully EA also takes time to improve other system such as balancing classes and fixing the random squad system.
Do you think these changes fix the beta’s flaws? Do they make you reconsider buying the game? Star Wars Battlefront 2 comes out on the 17th of November for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
