I had the chance to try a new mobile game called Unlimit Heroes and wanted to leave my impressions on it.
So, what is Unlimit Heroes? This is a game where you must gather a squad of heroes of different classes and backgrounds and fight against fearsome creatures. This is a tried and tested design that you probably know already, and one thing I have to admit: it is incredibly addictive – time flies without you noticing it.
Unlimit Heroes is carefully designed to suck you in, for better and worse. In the beginning, things are very smooth and gradually lot of possibilities open, but as you get closer to level 10, you can see it becoming a time-consuming challenge. You’re going to click a lot, click all over the place as the notifications pop up and warn you of an array of rewards and achievements, free hero summons and a lot more.
Unlimit Heroes features 155 heroes, some of them inspired by fantasy tales, such as Morgan Le Fay, Anubis and Robin Hood, while others are based on real legends, including Joan of Arc and Maximus. Joan of Arc, in particular, seems to be present in all hero collecting games, for some reason. Of course, you also get your usual cannon fodder heroes such as goblins, pandas, and cute kitties.
Gameplay mechanics in Unlimit Heroes are simple enough – you must assemble a team of five heroes and send them to fight wave after wave of monstrosities. Occasionally, another hero will join the party and you must select the best fighters from the bunch, mostly judging them by their star rating. Movement in the battlefield is automated, as is most of the combat, and your interaction is first and foremost involving hero skills. There are three types of skills: normal, ultimate and leader skills. When the cool-down is over, you can use the normal skill of each hero as the icon pops up over its card. The ultimate skills become available when the purple gauge is full, and then there’s the devastating leader skill, which you can use when the leader’s yellow bar is full. This one takes a long time to recharge, so use wisely.
Of course, there are several intricacies for you to notice and take advantage of, if you really want to level up your team. For example, heroes come in five basic types: water, fire, forest, light and dark, and each one has the upper hand over another. It is up to you to make a balanced team capable of making the most of these types, also knowing that heroes can be of warrior, magician or shooter varieties.
Leveling up a hero is a matter of using growth books and a certain amount of gold. If you’re out of books, the alternative is to use a hero from your team as material, something that will be more recurrent than you might think. After all, to get that level 30 hero you need to sacrifice those level 1 goblins or whatever you have laying around.
Unlimit Heroes really has a lot to do, as everything that I’ve mentioned is just a small summary of all the possibilities. You can also craft and enhance gear, enhance your classes in several areas (health, physical defense, evasion and so on), and enhance your team’s battle power entirely. During the first couple of hours you’ll be clicking around a lot, earning rewards left and right as you complete small or more elaborate tasks. After that, it becomes a more grind-based experience and this is where many players choose to pay up to progress faster or abandon the game.
Apart from the main adventure mode, there are other options for you to test your team and earn the much-desired materials. PvP is obviously one big draw, but your interaction is limited to picking your best heroes and watching them fight against a rival team. Other challenges involve battling wave after wave of enemies coming from all sides, or fighting a huge boss.
Unlimit Heroes doesn’t break any new ground, and it could do with more interaction during the battle phase. As a time killer it works nicely, providing plenty of content and options to discover, but it doesn't go much further than that. You will spend a lot of time leveling up your heroes and finding new ones before you can say that you have a fine team at your disposal. Give it a shot if you like hero collecting games, but be warned that this doesn't bring anything new to the table and there are way better games of the genre out there.
Doesn't look very good, I've seen many mobile games just like this one and I doubt that it is any better than the rest.
