holoz0r's A-Z of Steam: The Chosen RPG

in gaming •  6 years ago

The Chosen RPG is a RPG Maker Title, and it is obviously so. How do I know this? As someone who has used RPG maker to develop a game based on the very blockchain you're reading this review from - I recognised the loading screen sound effect. I'm going to be able to pick this title apart fairly easily based on my experience in using the tool.

Having said that, a RPG should be judged on three things:

  1. Writing
  2. Characters and their Development
  3. The freakin' story!
"When evil returns, a hero will awaken this shining blade of light that will cut and devour the darkness."

This is what we have as the premise of The Chosen RPG There's a mixture of prefab assets in this title, and some sourced elsewhere. The sprites and in game characters look to be original - which is good news. The item and attribute selection are out of the box RPG maker stuff. The developers have changed the currency to Crystals, away from gold, in a similar way to which I changed gold to SBD in my own Steem RPG.

If you want to, you can check that out here.

There's not much to say about this game other than the fact that it is a pretty generic RPG Maker title. I was not engrossed, or hooked after experiencing combat, meeting characters, and getting to the point of RPG'ing.

You need to have absolutely compelling writing that continues to draw the player into the title, and should really stand up better than how this title does.

Speaking of standing - when I went to take a screenshot to show the obvious scaling and proportion issues of the character sprites versus the enemy sprites - the game went back to the main menu. Awesome, right?

Bloody hell, that's a bad outcome for a game. Crashing just before you could take a screenshot? Terrible.

I agree that writing, or at least some event has to happen occasionally to drive the player along. I think the best games tell stories. Firewatch is one that comes to mind as big on story and character development.

It has been really disappointing just how bad my Steam library has been! :D

There's some much better titles coming up. More fun, more depth, better stability!
