Giving Games

I have a quick little market research question for people:

What makes a game worth giving as a gift?

I just bought a copy of Spire for a friend because it's a cool game, has a great art style, and is a surreal-fun sort of read that I think he'd enjoy.

My question to everyone else is "What kind of game would you get as a gift for people?"

Obviously the individual tastes of the person in question factor in, but are there certain things that would make a game more or less likely to be given?

For instance, I like pretty rulebooks, so I'm pretty much always going to feel good about giving something that has a great art style and layout. Something like Eclipse Phase or Legend of the Five Rings, for instance, that I know I love.

But what about other things? Licensed titles? Well-known games? Obscure games? What do you look for in a game when you're considering it as a gift? My focus is on tabletop RPGs, because that's like 80% of what I do, but I'm just curious in general what people look for when choosing a game as a gift (as opposed to just giving cash or a gift card).

Also, I swear I'm going to at least publish the next Segira alpha next week; sorry about having more stuff come up than expected.

I’m actually not very aware & informed in the game market, but I think you already hit the nail on the head with the presentation being a big factor. A great design & finish that makes a game or book more suitable for display certainly ups the potential for a gift idea.

I'd choose a game that's not that well known, something the presentee might not know or not know enough about to have it on their wish list.
Nice artwork etc. is important, of course. But I'd buy an indie book if I see that they did their best :)
