FIFA 18 Switch Review - Full-bodied Fifa for indoor and outdoor use

Nintendo does good business with the Nintendo Switch. The hybrid console flies over the counter. The success will not remain unnoticed by other publishers, which will also bring out more games for the Switch. EA, for the first time, has been publishing a Fifa for a Nintendo system.

But whoever thinks Switch owners are being shredded now with a fleeting collapsed port, is wrong. This version has been created specifically for the Switch and does not run on the Frostbite Engine. This has consequences for the graphic quality of the game, but it would be a shame to dwell on what Fifa 18 on the switch all not been. More importantly, what it is.

Just Fifa

It is a very good, solid, well-tried football game. Features that FIFA has featured in recent years are all present. Take control with the right handball, ball shield and physical duels, the exact way to take corner shots, free stairs and punishments; everything is present. Fifa 18 thus feels equally familiar, in a positive sense. This is not a freak, this is just Fifa.

In the field of game modes, this Switch version is a bit of a shortage. The story of The Journey is missing because the game does not run on the Frostbite Engine, but it is still alive. In particular, the possibilities are very limited, and it's a pity that Fifa Ultimate Team is entirely dependent on a (stable) internet connection, which is a little bit skew on the Switch's handheld capabilities. A specific offline segment would not have been superfluous on the Switch.

Career opportunities, women's football, live updates and any competition that you can imagine so much are present, so Fifa 18 is still breaking out of the content on the Switch. Whether in Fifa Ultimate Team you want to revive Ajax's glorious days with FUT Icons like Van der Sar, Jari Litmanen and Kluivert (Patrick, not Justin) in your team, or start a thrilling career as a coach of FC Paderborn in the third division of Germany; in FIFA 18 it's all possible.

Challenge your friends everywhere

The greatest asset of this Switch version is the versatility. At home in the dock it's just Fifa, but if you take the Switch on the train or to the campsite then it's, still, still 'just' Fifa. Still the same, with feature overload, serious football game like on television, but now in the palm of your hand. In fact, pull out the two Joy-Cons and you can challenge a friend everywhere, anytime. The control is then quite simplified due to lack of buttons. On the one hand, that's a pity, but it's good to imagine that friends who do not play FIFA every day, as well as getting easier. Those who take more seriously take multiplayer pots can of course just fall back on two Pro Controllers.

Unfortunately, Fifa 18 on the Switch has some rough edges. The most striking is the fragile frame rate as players, but players who stay spontaneously in a certain animation are hard to swallow. It seldom happens, but we do not have to tell fellow football fans how frustrating it is if you want to shoot and your player is vertically, because at the moment supreme his leg stays spastic in the sky.

Fifa 18 certainly has potential on the Switch and, in any case, offers enough to be taken seriously, but let's hope that EA thinks about this and this interesting line that will be used with it will continue next year. This year, this Switch version of FIFA 18 already gives us doubts as to which platform we will play the game most. With a few more serious optimizations we would not think about it anymore.

FIFA 18 for the Switch is now available.

Conclusion

Fifa 18 on the Switch is a full-bodied, serious football game for home and on the move. Especially the fact that you can always play this Fifa with a friend with only the Joy-Cons makes this the most versatile and social version of Fifa. However, at the technical level, the game can not match the other versions. Making that comparison is meaningless in many areas.

Thanks for your time.

The great thing is that you can play it on the move but I don't know if it has the same feeling like on the Ps4

If I play this on the train. I may annoy the other passengers when I celebrate scoring a goal. :) Good review
