The first football game was similar to this for the Sega Master System in the 1980s.
I remember with the Spectrum 48 or 128, also with the Commodore 64 and the Amstrad computers from the 1980s they football (soccer) game with had was like matchstick football players and the game was called Match Of The Day.
We also used to play the manager game called Football Director.
Those were the days when you had a load a game with a cassette tape and when you played other games every level you completed you had to rewind the tape on a certain part to load in the next level. Those were the 80s!
Hah... Amiga was my second gaming device. Loved it to pieces. I never encountered tapes, but disks. Kick Off 2 (1990) was the best of all.
I checked Match of the Day. name sounds familiar, but not sure I played it.
My first ever football game was actually on Atari. two stick figures, top view, and you chase after small dot. PvP, no CPU. if you player goes all way up the screen, he emerges from bottom again XD.
I played my share of football manager games, but not Football Director.

Thanks for sharing that with me too.
My mate`s older brother had a Amiga 500 we used to play that New Zealand Story on it.
Other games I kind of remember were the motorbike one Hang On or Super Hang On, a Bruce Lee game, a fighting game Double Dragon.
Yes that Match Of The Day was a terrible football game but at the time you thought it was the bees in knees.
One of mate`s had the Amstrad with the colour screen but my cousin he had the green monitor screen.
Think the first kind of computer I saw a friend with was the small rubber keyed Spectrum 48, at our school with had the big BBC micro computers in the 1980s.
With that Sensible Soccer was one of the best football games ever. Hours me and my mates battled away on that game.

Double Dragon was really great... I co-op played reloaded one with my kid! Much harder than I remember it!
I played Super Hang On as well. I was big fan of adventure games. Monkey Island being my first ever. Didn't even know English back then.
I played endless hours of Sensible Soccer. Liked their market transfer. But Sensible was more predictable than Kick Off to me, so I know if I shoot from here, it will go in. Kick Off seemed more random, so I loved it more.
I had a trick in Sensible Soccer... put Guardiola on as subs in second half, and he is super fast... guaranteed hatrick ;)
Good old days
