Dream Team Bros on Mario & Luigi | Game Review

in gaming •  7 years ago

Again I am here, giving you another review!
For this review, I'm going to be reviewing Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bros (Dream Team in the US)

History (Including Personal):

I got my Nintendo 3DS a year or two later than needed, but I was all over E3 back then more than I am now, so when I saw the continuation of my favourite RPG game, of COURSE I was hyped, however I completely forgot about it's release date.
One day when I came back from Asaba after a School Trip.

I went into GAME two weeks after it opened and saw it on the shelf for N5,000, bought it instantly and I found out that I was one of the first, if not THE first person in my community to buy it physically, but looking back, that bloke was probably trying to make me feel smug, but it was an accidental day one purchase.

Genre :
Japanese style, Role-Playing,Console-style RPG, Console-style RPG.

Developed by Alphadream Corporation

Rating:

PEGI 3, E for Everyone, come on, it's Nintendo, did you really expect anything different from them? That's what I thought!

Story:

Dream Team Bros takes place after Bowser's Inside Story, it's a celebratory day in Pi'illo Island, Princess Peach and the Iconic Italian Plumbing Bros are invited as honoured guests, but it turns out that something isn't right when the Bros stumble on a Stone Pillow, they then discover that Luigi has the dreaming power of Narcolepsy and cause magical Dream Bubbles to appear above his head.

Mario jumps in and it's discovered that Princess Peach has been kidnapped by a purple cloud called Antasma.

Mario returns and revives the Pillow Stone which turned out to be a Pi'illo Prince called Dreambert (These dream puns are everywhere, you pretty much have to deal with them).

Mario, Luigi Dreambert and the returning Starlow walk around where Dreambert tells them that Antasma is an evil being from 1,000 years ago where the Pi'illo race lived, Antasma then used a powerful stone called the Dark Stone to trap the Pi'illo race into Nightmare chunks within the Dream World which Mario and Luigi gladly offer to rescue.

[Bowser]

Until suddenly Bowser, who gets Salty that someone else is kidnapping Peach and goes into the Dream World himself to encounter Antasma, the flying bat then proposes they work together with the promise to Bowser that they can rule the world with the Plumbers defeated and Peach by his side; Bowser obviously accepts this offer and they both leave together.

The Bros are then informed of the Dream Stone which has the power to defeat Antasma, and while the Bros do succeed in getting it, it's then lost to them when Antasma and Bowser unleash the Nightmare Lullaby, putting the whole island to sleep and stealing the inhabitants Dream Energy, in order to gain more power.

So with the Stone gone, Dreambert informs the Bros of the Ultibed, the world's most comfortable bed that has the power to destroy Bowser's new floating fortress along with the help of the Zeekeeper that the Bros also wake up and fight.

The game finishes after a tough fight with Anatasma and tougher fight against Bowser, after he become Dream Bowser due to absorbing the Dream Stone, after the fight, Peach is rescued and the Holiday is just resumed... and that's it really, it pretty much ends on a more simpler and not as exciting tone when compared to Bowser's Inside Story.

Gameplay:

It's relatively the same, except you don't control Bowser, it's just the Mario & Luigi story the whole way through, you have your 3D Outer World sections, and your 2D Sidescrolling Dream moments.

The only difference here is the battles, it's the same with the 3D moments, but in the 2D moments you only control Mario, Luigi appears as a dream formation which not only gives Mario extra Health and Defence, but it also gives him extra attack, but this does add some more challenge to it.

See when you died during battle, you always had the other bro to revive you, here however, you die in the Dream World, you have to restart the battle again. The worst part is they've made it easier here, they got rid of the Retry Clock gimmick and if you die, you have the option to start the battle over, or start it again in Easy Mode.

See where this is going? Yeah it's pretty much a watered down version of the battle system which I seriously hate as it removes some of the challenge that the original ones had, there's not really a punishment for forgetting to Save.

You can still Save at any given Save Block, but now you can Save whenever you want at the touch of the touch screen, effectively removing the need for Save Blocks, some more special moves have been added, but explaining them would make this longer than it needs to, some have returned to be nice and 3D, others have been brought in to show some effective use with the Gyro, and some are just.... there.

The bros have their own special moves (Now called Bro Moves), and they each have their own amount of Bro Points, so you can work out different amounts for battles.

Likes

The game is great, the art style is very nice and the 3D Models look brilliantly designed for the 3DS, the writing is on point and still has the comedy side that it was known for, the music is fantastic and doesn't fail to get you in the atmosphere.

Dislikes:

Some of the environments can look a bit bland and outright forgettable at times, also while I did compliment the music, I will criticize the sound, there have been multiple times where I've heard Stock Sound effects, sound effects that don't even fit in the context, like when a statue was moving, I heard the chattering teeth sound effect.

Overall:

Overall the game is good, not great, but good to be played again, if you want to get the game, I wouldn't stop you from doing so, I'll give it an 8.5 out of 10

With that in mind, this is your Blockchain Entertainer, signing off, thanks for reading.
