Gaming Retrospective - Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader

Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader is an action-RPG set in an alternate history Renaissance Europe with a touch of supernatural, game was released in 2003. by good old Black Isle Studios.

Story plot is revolved around the rift in reality that changed medieval history by allowing all sorts of monsters to enter the mortal realm. During the game, our hero the crusader who is a descendant of Richard the Lionheart goes on an adventure to destroy the rift and during his travels he will interact with many historical figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Saladin, Joan of Arc and Galileo Galilei, you can even stumble upon weirdly shaped Nostradamus. Art style of this game still looks great with streets of Barcelona filled with things to do. When you leave Barcelona things start to fall apart as you change realities and locations all over the Europe and Middle East.

Gameplay is a mix between ARPG and SPECIAL system from Fallout games focused on character's strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. You can also chose different Traits that can help you during those hard late game levels.

Late game levels are hit and run, and that is what made this game so much fun for me, if you misscalculate the situation you will die. If your character is full melee you had to rely on choke points where you would tank up and kill the enemy one by one. This game offers players great setting and challenging gameplay, it is a long forgotten gem worth remembering.
