Halloween Gaming: DOOM by id Software

With less than a week to go until Halloween, very few games will scratch that gore-fest itch that's edging you closer to insanity.

I've published pieces on DOOM (2016) in the past, and each time I feel the necessity to urge all to jump into it and allow it to unfold in all its modern glory. There's always the originals, if you're not particularly feeling the 2016 reboot, but trust me, you'll be missing out.

DOOM (2016) expands upon all that made the originals great: their lack of cutscenes and story that slow down the player; their pacing and opportunities for the player to advance using the tactics they wish to use; their all-out action in which the depths of Hell are unleashed.

The use of the latest technological advancements in game design engines and computer hardware turn DOOM into a fluid, beautiful game of pure chaos and destruction. Executing Hell's creations in such obscure and gory manners--which is justified with the fact that you are the Doomslayer, and they are creatures from Hell--as you platform throughout the environment, switching weapons based on the numerous factors that are presented. Do you want to sit back a little and take out a few of the enemies before diving in with the shotgun to finish them off, or perhaps just dive in with the sawed-off in an entirely up-close and personal feat of chaos?

Player freedom is entirely what DOOM is about. There are few rails to guide you forward; the rest is entirely dependent on your play style and choice of weapon upgrades as you progress. It's near perfection.
