Little Nightmares Review and Thoughts

I know I might be a little late to this one, but I recently picked up the game and my god do I need to talk about this one. I was expecting something good, and I think I got what I wanted. (This should go without saying but, Viewer beware! This is spoiler territory!)

Little nightmares promotions tell you to come and "play with your inner childhood fears." This gives an excellent description of what the game is based on. During your adventure you play as a girl named Six. It is your job to keep Six alive and well by navigating through what is seemingly a boat. During this you encounter ugly monstrousities and thoughtful puzzles. It also has a story that drives you to push forward even though so little is said about it.

The Gameplay
Depending on what platform you bought it on, (console or PC) you may find the controls more smooth than the other. For me personally I feel as the controls for console are a bit clunky. The buttons seem oddly placed at first and the way they expect you to hold them down the entire time can be quite annoying and frustrating. Most of the time during the game I found myself jumping in the wrong direction or somehow falling off of the edge of a pipe. It can be hard to tell which way your thumbstick will lead Six.

They also expect you to figure out most of the tiny bits of gameplay by yourself and don't really guide you much. It's up to you to really think about your next choice of action. This can result in hours of pondering about what's next for some and can really bring down the fun factor. For me I just happen to be a full explorer so I naturally found things before I was supposed to. This won't be the case for everyone however.

The Visuals
This is one of the biggest places that Little Nightmares Shines in. If it was on a scale of 1/50 I'd give it a solid 44. Every area in this game is unique and you find it difficult to feel like you've played in that same place before. All of the levels have their own unique colors and touches, and it never feels like they break out of their respective areas. Because of this the game is very immiersive, especially in a dark room.

Through all of the background scenery in the game you never notice a empty or poorly put together space. It feels like an actual room. It looks like you could walk in there and explore the place. The enemies look horrifying and have a sense of realism to them. They look like something a child would dream up, and that makes them all the more creepy.

The Soundtrack
This is also a place that Little Nightmares does extremely well in. The music for the game is usually well placed and has an inner lacing of tension. You always feel that if you run too fast you might grab the attention of something you'd much rather avoid thanks to the beat of the music. They also do a fantastic job of picking when to play a certain soundtrack during a plot twist or shocking event. That music still haunts my thoughts a little bit. I'd be hard pressed to find a bad song in the game.

As for gameplay sound in general, they try to make the world seem and feel as real as possible. My god do they succeed in this part of it. Everything makes it own subtle sounds, from the constant sound of Six's feet hitting the cold floor, to the groaning and shifting of the supposed boat. You can hear the water droplets that hit the floor with perfect quality, and the bangs and creaks Six makes always puts you on edge. The way that it handles sound is so well that the first monster you meet survives through listening to the environment. Six has to be extremely quiet around this one in particular. You can even hear her heartbeat increase when he is near her.

The Enemies
Little Nightmares pulls all the stops out for this section. They know that you come here to face terrifying enemies, and they do not disappoint. They are all either gruesome, revolting, or pure terrifying. Most of the time it's a mix of all three of those qualities. However the thing that really makes them scary is that they all have their own AI. They all have their own ways of reacting and hunting you down. Some are more frightening than others, and the sounds they make really push the realism to the next level.

The Story
The story is the only thing that leaves me wanting more from the game. It is quite short on length at approximately 10 hours in length. It could definitely use more levels and the way they tell the story is completely through gameplay. There are no words spoken once in this adventure and everything is up to you to put together. You really have no idea why you are doing half the things you are during the game time. All you really know for sure is that you are trying to get out. They could really throw in a dlc to expand upon this section and add a few more levels. The game is fantastic, but it is way too short for my tastes. I had dread in my mouth when I found I had already met the final boss.

Conclusion
All in all, this game is a must buy. However, I'd wait until it went on sale or you can buy it from a friend for cheap. It's an amazing game that I would give a 8.5/10. The only problem is with such a short story to play through it isn't worth the full price. It has some replay value to find all the secrets, but since the levels are so linear and that it's so short there isn't much besides that. Don't miss out on this amazing game, but spend wisely.
