The Everquest Chronicles: Kithicor and Beyond

in gaming •  5 years ago

It all started in December 2000 when I purchased Everquest, the game. I have been a gamer since the early 1980s but had never played an MMO before.

In the next few weeks, @bingbabe would become an ‘EQ Widow' as I was drawn into the harsh unforgiving world of Norrath, an obsession that would last for several years.

More recently I installed the Everquest client again on my PC. It's free to play now but a far cry from the heyday of the early noughties when adventurers banded together for quests and glory.

Many zones are now deserted as players have long since left the game for other ones with superior graphics, and easier gameplay.

This is the story replayed today as my level 66 Barbarian Shaman who can now freely roam through low and mid-level zones without fear of being killed.

If you are not a gamer and have never played an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) then you may not be able to relate to this at all.

Everquest was named ‘Evercrack' due to its addictive nature and for good reason.

Kithicor forest was the ultimate nightmare for the newbie player, by reputation if nothing else.

As dawn broke I headed to the north wall using my 'Sense Direction' ability. Game maps had to be printed on paper and unless you used this ability there was no way of knowing which direction you were facing.

EverQuest 01_12_2019 19_19_54.png

I saw the north wall and made east at a run passing low-level creatures far below me. I figured they were as I received no aggro.. yet.

The lush grasses of the bank slid through my boots, yet my right boot appeared to be walking on thin air.

EverQuest 20_01_2020 16_51_40.png

Ah, this was but a technical deficiency of PC graphics from the year 2000 I had to tell myself, and I could not feel those silky blades between my left toes.

I ran on feeling more comfortable and confident the closer I got to the east side of Kithicor forest without encountering any level 50 necromancers raining death spells from afar.

...'Was this it, or had I simply been fortunate?'...

Some houses close to the zone got my interest but I dared not go close as I knew the wicked minds and thoughts of the scheming evil Everquest game designers.

EverQuest 20_01_2020 16_56_37.png

One step closer and a spell would come hurtling through the walls of the house and 'instadeath' would befall me.

For players, we needed line of sight for our kills; however, monsters cheated and could hit and cast through solid objects, motherfuckers!

Relieved to have made it through this anti-climatic zone, I zoned into what was formally the West Commonlands, only to find it now named ’The Commonlands’.

In my younger days, East Commonlands was for newbie players and the West for slightly older ones. It would be the West section I would be doing my killing in for a short time.

I started toward the human city of Freeport passing snakes, ghouls, wolfs all of which now ignore me as I am far too high level for them.

The Commonlands were always full of NPC's, a few aggressive and much to high level to have any right being in this zone.

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_00_54.png

The Befallen is a low-level dungeon that everyone ignored even during Everquest's' heyday. It was full of pits and traps the unwary could fall down and word quickly got around that it was not a place to visit even grouped.

Zoning in, I could see why. The would-be tank would immediately have three or four skeletons wailing on him. You need to remember that in 2000 many players were using dial-up, and zoning times were erratic.

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_02_01.png

If you as the healer zoned in after the tank, he may be dead by the time you are there and too late to heal him. They should have moved these piles of bones further down from the entrance-way.

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_12_02.png

…’human guards are positioned all over the Commonlands. The Dark Elves from nearby Neriak would camp them for experience’…

Continuing west I came across the ‘tunnel’. This now empty place was once full of players peddling their wares and was a hive of activity.

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_09_14.png

I bought many an item from another player just shouting out what he had for sale.

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_09_36.png

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_10_37.png

Every now and again some twat would pull a Hill Giant into the tunnel causing mayhem, the giant none too caring about who he would like to crush next. It was madness but crazy fun.

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_05_29.png

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_07_39.png

…'when younger I camped these Orcs regularly, there was no Chief in those days, he's an ugly bugger don't you think?'…

My journey continued east and I could see Freeport approaching, but this was not the city I remembered it to be.

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_13_17.png

Now it looks more akin to the evil races, with bats, rats, and skeletons populating the entrance.

EverQuest 29_01_2020 23_14_00.png

The guards, however, are still human and at least Boomba the Big is still hanging around selling his crap that nobody wants to buy.

Do you still game? Modern games I mean?

Yes, but exclusively on the PS4, still playing The Witcher. The DLC is very well written and keeping me engaged. I finished the main game now.

I have never tried The Witcher actually. I'm more of a fallout/Skyrim/outer worlds dude. I should give it a go when I get more time

Your missing one of the best made games ever. It's cheap now..., if you liked Skyrim (a game I completed and ALL the DLC), you will love it.

Ah, I checked and realised why I haven't. It's third person. I have a weird thing where I just can't stand third person games

Ack your really missing out. Did you notice my Barbarian Shaman wears a kilt, and that he's a 'Barbarian' hehe..., know what I'm saying?

In The Witcher, there's a fierce race who live on the isles of Skellige.., and guess what accent they behold?

And speaking of which... why do Dwarves in RPG's all have scottish accents?

It's a popular thing for grumpy temperamental aggressive folk to have that accent eh... No idea why. :0D

I thought the kit was standard fantasy dress fodder hehe

I remember when people used to kite powerful mobs into the cities and stuff like that in WoW. It was always really good fun. I had a late meeting last night so I dug into Witcher 3 a bit more. It kind of feels repetitive right now, but the scope of the world is pretty impressive. I have had to tuck tail and run a couple of times already from monsters much more powerful than me.

Stick with it, I'm about to write my article about The Witcher. I have finished the main game now and am doing the DLC.

If the price doesn't come down I probably won't end up purchasing any of the expansions. If Steam has a sale though...

This was a blast from the past for me. My interest in Everquest was only one of admiration from afar as I was not really into the whole MMO thing at the time. I did know some people that kept talking about it and I would rarely see them after they got hooked. The same thing in a way happened to me with Dark Age of Camelot where I ditched classes, bailed on my friends and destroyed at least one relationship with a GF over it.

The graphics in DAoC were a bit better, but nothing like today's standards are. I logged into a free to play MMO on my PS4 the other day and it was vastly superior to anything we had in the late 90's early 00's but I suppose that should seem obvious since 20 years before Everquest we were all marveling at how epic the graphics on a Atari 2600 were.

Now I don't play MMO's but I am sure i will be back to them someday. I have realized over the years that no matter how much I love an MMO I always end up at the same point eventually: Getting bored as hell of it and feeling a bit of regret for investing so much time into it. :)

I did know some people that kept talking about it and I would rarely see them after they got hooked.

A friend of mine was the same, never saw him until I started playing. I still never saw him as he was many levels above me.

The same thing in a way happened to me with Dark Age of Camelot where I ditched classes, bailed on my friends and destroyed at least one relationship with a GF over it.

Ouch.., my marriage survived though I don't know how. I have the old DAOC box in the cupboard somewhere, I tried it, as well as just about all the others but it didn't grip me.

and feeling a bit of regret for investing so much time into it. :)

That's it, and why I don't play them now. They are great for wasting time but that's it. I still have the urge to have another go at WoW.

Wow. Everquest sure was pioneering, in every rustic sense of the word.

I think I gave it a try back in the day. Had a free trial and after 45 minutes gave up trying to figure it out. When World of Warcraft came along, though... At least I didn't make The Wife a WOW widow--we played together!

WoW was much more accommodating, more friendly and handholding.

I too jumped on WoW in early 2004 and abandoned Everquest.. it amazes me that EQ is still going and producing new expansions.

I tell you it's nostalgic after almost 20 years going to these places again.

I didn't realize they were still producing new content. That is impressive.

It's funny how sometimes you just want a more challenging experience. Like, we tried Second Life for a while and the social bits were all right (mostly because we actually met a few decent funny people on there) but in terms of building or changing the avatar or even walking around... every single bit of it was difficult. And yet I know people spend significant parts of their lives in there.

I had a go at Second Life, people were buying bits of it at the time for dollars.., a strange concept as the devs can just kill the project and run for the hills!

It didn't grasp me at all, though I had American friends who loved it. Where were the monsters?

I think, in Second Life, the monsters are... within us...

Dum da dum....

We just happened to find this orientation island where a bunch of regulars hung out. A few folks from the UK, actually, and this raging ultraconservative supermarket worker from somewhere in the rural US. It was low-grade trolling and some actually decent conversation. Because The Wife and I never used voice, we were accused of being the same person. (Why were we only ever on at the same time...)

I haven't managed to find the same sense of fun on there since like 2012, though.

Wow was the rabbit hole I fell down. It was just known as crack and was where I spent most of my time my junior and senior year in college.

Never to the point where it effected my grades but was full clearing some of the raids shortly after they came about.

What killed the love of the game for me was my guild fell apart and never really clicked with anyone else. Just wasn't the same for me anymore and it lost a lot of its luster after that.

Raids.. don't get me started.. my first ever was a PUG Fear raid.., you can imagine how that went! Many hours of my life wasted, this was before audio conferences.. it was mayhem!

Hello, @slobberchops. I am not a gamer and the very first online game I ever participated in was Splinterlands/Steemmonsters. In fact, @splinterlands has an on-going contest here, in case you are interested... and you can compare Everquest with SteemMonsters.

Have a wonderful evening!
