Probably the only Zombie based game that has a truly gripping narrative that made it so iconic.
The sequel to this game is due for release in Q3 of this year, and many gamers will be returning to this icon to relive that amazing story in preparation for part 2. So I decided to dig up some interesting facts about this game to share with you.
So here are 5 facts you never knew about The Last of Us.
5 – The Knife.
When you first start the game, you have an obscured view out of a window with 'Press Start' in the lower left corner.
When you play the game, you will know that Ellie uses a small knife to defend herself with and to brutally murder the games villain. Its only a small pocket knife, but Ellie uses it to great effect.
When you complete the game for the first time, when you go back to that same start screen of the window, you will notice Ellie's knife is on the windowsill. But when you start playing the game again, the knife is gone.
Naughty Dog, the dev team behind this game, put this little touch in as when Ellie is progressing in the game, she needs the knife, but when you complete the game, Ellie no longer needs the knife and places it down. Only a small touch in the game, but when you realise why they did that, just adds more of that realism to the game.

4 – Last Names.
In the English release of the game, the protagonists are just listed as Joel and Ellie.
Throughout the game, the two characters always use there fist names only, never revealing there last name, and we all accepted that because we still connected with them on that emotional level, we felt as though we knew them well enough, we only ever needed to know there first names.
However, they do in fact have last names, but they can only ever be found on the original PS3 game box/manual. Oh and it was only the Japanese release that saw this little detail. There full names are listed as Joel Miller, and Ellie Williams.
Only a small detail, but for those hardcore fans of the game, they will make sure that they get hold of a Japanese copy of the game.

3 – The Story.
Not many people know that the story for the Last of Us was originally very different to what you actually see in the final cut of the game.
As with any development process, things will need to be changed to accommodate the development process. One of the biggest changes in the story was Tess was going to be the main antagonist with her gang that Joel was a part of. And the ending of the game was supposed to be longer. When Joel and Ellie are driving off into the sunset cliché, Tess was going to ram them off the road and catches Joel with Ellie escaping. Ellie was then going to be the one who kills Tess, just in the nick of time before Tess was going to kill Joel. That was the original ending and how it was pitched before any development began.
Although the released version of the game is a masterpiece, I can see how this would of played out.

2 – Ellie's Rewrites.
As part of the reason why the story changed as much as it did was partly down to the Voice actress for Ellie, Ashley Johnson.
As well as doing the voice over for Ellie's character, Ashley also did most of the motion capture too. During this time, the Actors were allowed to improvise a lot of the action scenes and add-lib the script at the same time. During this time, Ellie's character evolved into something quite unique and the directors with Naughty Dog liked it so much, they changed the script to suit what the actress and actors were ad-libbing, as well as the motion capture performances.
Ellie's character was supposed to be more scared and quite, but after Ashley Johnson's performances, Ellie came into her own and became the character we all know today.

1 – They are Alive.
The Fungus infected zombies in the game went through several design concepts before they settled with the fungus growing out of the face ones.
What many people don't know is the idea of the fungus infection was inspired by a real fungus that grows inside a creature to the point it can control it and eventually kill it to release more spores. The fungus is called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis and it will only infect insects. It can be found in tropical rainforests in both Brazil and Thailand. The insect will ingest the fungus spore and then it will grow inside the insect, eventually it will make the insect eat more to supply the fungus with more food. It will then break through the skin and after a while, will kill the insect and release spores to begin all over again.
The main thing to take away though is the insect are alive while this fungus takes them over. In the game, the fungus acts in the exact same way. So you may be thinking you are killing mindless zombies in the game, when in fact, they are very much alive while the fungus takes them over until it kills them. Pretty horrific when you think about it.

That last little fact is very grousome. Imagin being infected and having a fungus grow out of your head, controlling you and no matter what, you can't do anything as you are trapped in your own body. That would suck... i need to set up the PS3 now.....

It's a shame that I didn't have the opportunity to play the game yet. Maybe in a near future, but I have hope that the 2nd game could be even much better than the first. That's why they are taking so long. :)

I would say this is true for Telltale's The Walking Dead too (at least for Season 1, I've played only that until now).
Sadly I didn't have a chance to play The Last of Us yet.

Yeah, there is no question about that, considering the trailers, the success and the praise the game constantly gets. I just wanted to point out that The Walking Dead is good too regarding storytelling and characters. :)
