Ultra's Reviews: Kirby's Dreamland (Gameboy, Wii, 3ds)

in gaming •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello again and Welcome to Month of Kirby! During this Month I will be Reviewing 6 certain kirby games,

In the early 90's Masahiro Sakurai, a 19 year old HAL Laboratory employee, began developing a 2D platformer game Designed for beginning gamers. He designed a simple character they soon called Twinkle Popopo, but Nintendo insisted on renaming the little Character Kirby. That first game became Kirby's Dreamland. on the Gameboy

(North American Box Art)

Plot

Kirby's Dreamland has a VERY simple Plot.

One Day the Tyrannical Ruler of Dreamland, King Dedede Stole ALL of Dreamland's Food Supply Being the Hero it is up to Kirby to Traverse 4 Very Linear Levels, Their Respective boss battles, and finally king dedede to save the Food.

That's it. no Seriously that's it. that is all of the Plot this game has, and None of it is explored ingame.

while a bit too simple for my taste it was the first game in the series so ill give it some slack.

Also dont ya love it when video game plots used to be written in like 3 sentences? Makes my Job easier

Gameplay

The Controls are simple, Kirby can jump, Inhale foes, Puff up into a balloon and float. thats it, There are no Powers Yet till the Sequel, Kirby's Adventure so the only way kirby can attack bosses is Spitting Out the Stars that bosses drop back at them.

the game itself is linear level based, because of how the game is designed you can just fly past the entire level, but you miss out on some secrets having rewards for Veteran gamers while being easy for new gamers, just like how the game was intended

However Beating the game gives you a Little Button combination that Activates Extra Mode.

and Extra mode....Hoo Boy, Kirby Dreamland is both The Easiest and Hardest kirby game at the same time because of this mode. Extra mode is "Nintendo Hard"

Nintendo Hard is a Term Describing the huge difficulty of Early Games on the Classic nintendo

The Extra Mode uses the same environment but a number of enemies are replaced with more hazardous ones and the bosses gain dangerous new attacks. And Kirby only has 3 Units of Health Rather then 6 in the Normal Game

while the Normal levels are not that bad (other then some Cheep Shots), the Bosses are something else. The first two bosses, Whispy Woods, and Lololo & Lalala. just get faster. But that Blimb Kabula....Hole. Lee. Poop. this dude.

Then there is Kracko. While the main fight is not so bad. the Mini boss fight, Kracko Jr. has such an Erratic Pattern and he is so fast, JUST SIT STILL DANG YOU!!!

Extra Mode is just a Jerk. And who ever Created these Boss patterns Has a Few Screws Loose.

But is fun, Kirby is Rarely like this so Having Difficult mode in a rather Easy game adds a bit of replay value and a bit of a refreshing change of pace.

and after beating Extra Mode you get Config mode, which allows you to do Extra mode again but you ca change how many Heath points and Lives you have, if you want a real challenge you can do 1 Health and 1 life.

Presentation

The Visuals look rather well for a gameboy game, you can clearly tell the backround and enemies apart. and most of the sprites look well.

The music, while good has rather low quality today. but what can ya do.

Final Boss and Ending (Spoilers, yada yada yada)

So after Reaching the final Level you have to go on a small level and boss rush. after beating those you battle against king dedede. you fight dedede

Dedede can be challenging, you have to wait for him to make a star for you to inhale and spit them back at him rather simple. keep doing that and you win

and after winning Dedede gets BLasting off again. and kirby turns into a large balloon to drop all of the food in the castle into the land. ending kirby's Dreamland

Overall

This game started kirby on a High note and started The Puffball into Nintendo's History.

I would like to Remind you that this game was made by ONE GUY.

this game is fun all the way through, Even Extra mode was fun.

A Gamer who is starting to get into gaming should have a good time with this one, but an Experienced gamer who is looking for something more. you are not going to find it here. however if you are looking for something Retro Hard you should get something out of Extra Mode.

Also Sudden change in Rating now im doing out of 5 rather then out of 10

Kirby's Dreamland gets a...
4/5
Fun Experience for those who enjoy this type of thing

Thats it for the Review, See ya All later for Kirby's Adventure on the......Classic Nintendo? in 1993?
