7 Promising Open World Games at E3 2017 – PC/XBOX/PS4

in gaming •  8 years ago

Open world games are one of my favorite types of games (although I do play all genres). E3 2017 just flew by, and as usual, many games were showcased. Of course, among the crowd of game launches and previews, only a few truly stood out.

7 Open World Games That Caught my Eye

Here are the most promising/anticipated open world games announced at E3 –

  1. Skull and Bones

Set in the golden age of piracy, Skull and Bones is Ubisoft’s endeavor toward a game based on warship battles. The game takes place in the vast Indian Ocean, where far-reaching colonial empires, powerful trading corporations, and ruthless pirate gangs endlessly roam.

Yes, this does seem like Ubisoft’s attempt to cash in on Assassins Creed: Black Flag’s ship warfare success. Although it was not very refined or even a major part of the game, it was fun. Skull and Bones should hopefully deliver an excellent experience to those who love open world games.

Platforms – PC, PS4, and XBOX One.

  1. Shadow of The Colossus

This one is a PS4 exclusive. It builds on the success of the original Shadow of Colossus, remastering and overhauling the graphics by using the hardware capabilities of the PS4.

It should garner a lot of interest from fans of the original, who want to see the familiar colossi and the Forbidden Land in eye-catching detail.

Platforms – PS4

  1. Fortnite

This latest offering from Epic Games seems like a cross between Orcs Must Die and a survival shooter, zombie (monster) apocalypse game with a sprinkle of RPG elements. That said, it looks like loads of fun! Especially with a group of friends.

Build your defenses, hunt for loot in the vast open world, and keep your fort safe from monster attacks. The flexibility and options that the game provides are astounding. This ensures that almost every player will have a unique experience within the game, or so they say.

Platforms – PC, PS4, XBOX One, and Mac.

  1. Middle-Earth: Shadow of War

The sequel to Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor was finally announced. Shadow of War features an original story with the return of Talion and Celebrimbor. They must go behind enemy lines to forge an army and turn all of Mordor against the Dark Lord, Sauron.

Those familiar with the lore of Middle-Earth are sure to anxiously await this release (guilty). I loved the first game, and I hope that remains the case with the sequel as well. However, huge expectations and hype may be its downfall.

Platforms – XBOX ONE, PS4, and PC.

  1. Sea of Thieves

Plunder. Loot. Steal. Kill. That basically sums up the Sea of Thieves game world. Set in a massive shared open world, the objective is to gain loot. Fight with other pirates on the high seas.

Form a crew and voyage to treasure-filled islands, face legendary creatures and test your mettle in epic ship battles against other pirates.

Platforms – Windows 10, XBOX One.

  1. Anthem

Anthem was definitely the star of E3, stealing the limelight from a lot of games. Exosuits, similar to the Nanosuits in Crysis, should make every aspect of gameplay interesting and unique to the player.

Adding in a massive open world just sweetened the deal. In fact, a linear story mode in a similar setting would not have generated this much interest (in my opinion). This is one of the games that I have high hopes for and really want to try, but the release date of fall 2018 is a slight bummer.

However, as long as the game is polished and isn’t rushed, most gamers won’t mind the wait.

No beta announcement yet.

Platforms – PC, PS4, and XBOX One.

  1. Far Cry 5

No open world list can be complete without a Far Cry game in it. Heading towards its fifth iteration, Far Cry 5 had better deliver a quality game experience. Every Far Cry release is bogged down by massive expectations which can lead to disappointment.

Set in Hope County, Montana, you must rise up and spark the fires of resistance to liberate a besieged community in the small town.

Platforms – PC, PS4, and XBOX One.
