Ghost Recon: Wildlands wants the piece of the cake with Battle Chests aka Loot Boxes or "The Gold Rush"

in gaming •  7 years ago

Loot Boxes are all the rage these days, going strong since the first serious appearance in Valve's Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike Global Offensive. With extreme success of this system came impostors and soon every other game, be it multiplayer or singleplayer, had to have some kind of box reward system.

Now we are in 2018, and Ubisoft, one of the most prolific lootbox abuser is at it again, now incorporating Battle Chests into the Ghost Recon Wildlands - a lukewarm third-person, open world, tactical shooter released in early 2017.

Bolivia has become the largest cocaine producer in the world. The vicious Santa Blanca drug cartel has turned the country into a narco-state, leading to fear, injustice, and violence. The Ghosts, a legendary U.S. Elite Special Operations team, is sent behind enemy lines to wreak havoc and break alliances between the cartel and the corrupted government.

Although the french publisher packs lootboxes in every game, newly released and older (Rainbow Six Siege received Alpha Packs around one and a half year into its lifetime) I have to give it to them - in all of their games I played this system contained cosmetics only.

In official press release Ubisoft calms players with a promise that their doctrine hasn't changed and Battle Chests won't feature items which might give paying players an unfair advantage.

What do you think about this step? Do you tolerate lootboxes?
