Video games may be a medium that is still fairly young. Nevertheless, video games have gone through the transformation of a medium that seems very full of limits to something that pushes the limits of modern technology. This media development is the inspiration of Shiro Games developers to develop their game called Evoland. As the title suggests, Evoland summarizes the evolution of video games, especially from the RPG genre, in a brief, dense, and full of satires that alludes to various things about video games.

Evoland was born from Ludum Dare's clock game event as a simple game that attracted the attention of many people. Seeing the potential of this game, the developer was immediately developed a commercial version that is much better than the game version of the clock for PC and Mac in 2013. Now, almost 2 years after released for PC, Evoland was released for Android and iOS. What is the quality of RPG with this unique concept? And is the mobile version qualified enough to be paired with the PC version? Find the answers below.

History lesson

In Evoland, you will be presented with a brief history of video game technology. When you start the game, you will be presented with a 2-bit graphical display full of restrictions. Your character will only move to the right. After you move to the right you will find a treasure chest that will give you a feature to move to the left, and once you open the chest on the left screen then the game will show a 2-bit view with a larger area to explore.

As the game progresses, you'll unlock more features such as sound effects, background music, the ability to use swords, the ability to move smoother (early in the game you can only move rigidly in four directions), 16-bit color graphics , 256-bit color graphics, 3D graphics, and more. Some of these features exist that are just sweetener only, there are only serves as spice comedy in the game, but many also play a very important role in the gameplay.

For example, the further in the game, you will be given the ability to change the graphics between 2D and 3D quite freely. Later there will be some parts of the level that you will not be able to pass when the game is in 2D view and can only be passed when the game bergrafis 3D, and vice versa. This makes this game so has its own unique puzzle for forcing players to change the game graphics depending on the situation and conditions.

For battle affairs, Evoland not only has one type of fight, but there are three types! The most common types of battles you'll find are fight-style adventure games like the Legend of Zelda series. In this mode you can attack the enemy directly using your various weapons and the character's life will be represented by three heart symbols at the top right corner of the screen. The second battle type is a turn-based battle like you usually find in classic JRPG, especially in the Final Fantasy series. Lastly, and what I think is most exciting, is the crawling dungeon mode that you can find in games like Diablo or Torchlight series. In this mode the battle runs quite crowded and the enemy will often drop things that unfortunately can only be used in the dungeon in question.

Unfortunately, although it has many interesting and fun modes, you could say the execution of Evoland gameplay is less than the maximum. This type of turn-based combat feels stiff, dungeon crawling battle feels as an arena for the origin of push only, and the most common mode of direct combat has a less good control. This makes Evoland an exciting game played to see interesting game world references instead of being a good and fun game to play from the gameplay point of view.

Audio Visual Time Halls

As I mentioned above, Evoland presents various types of gaming technology from the most ancient to gaming technology that ... well not too modern anyway, but just go ahead. This makes Evoland a fun game to play for you who just looking for audio visual entertainment. Unfortunately this also makes Evoland a rather limited game. Once you have found all kinds of audio and visual technology, the game becomes less interesting to play, especially considering this game is not a game that can be spelled out easily.

There is not much that I can discuss about the presentation of Evoland because this game has a basic concept that is built from the development of gameplay and video game presentation from time to time. Obviously I'm pretty sure you will not be disappointed with the quality of the graphics or the music of this game, as long as your game will be presented with quality graphics and music that increases with time.

Play Anywhere, Die Anywhere

Not much has changed between Evoland PC version with mobile version. But as someone who does not like virtual joysticks, I can say that playing Evoland using a virtual joystick is not a fun experience. Sometimes the control will feel less responsive to avoid enemy attacks into a challenge.

It might be unfair to compare the quality of PC controls that are played using keyboards and spacebar with virtual joystick quality, especially since I am not a person familiar with the type of control. But if I recall other games like Reaper that are capable of providing quality control without using uncomfortable and restrictive virtual joysticks, it seems like Shiro Games can imitate it to be applied in Evoland. In addition, there is no significant difference between the two versions of this game.

Conclusion

So, is Evoland worth buying? My advice is to buy this game if there is a discount. At full price, chances are you'll think of Evoland as a mere entertainment with reference to things about video games. Evoland is not a bad game, but because this game is built with various types of gameplay, making each type of game feels less polished and made too basic.

If you need 2 to 4 hours of entertainment filled with game terms and nostalgia for the various RPG series you've ever played, Evoland definitely should not miss you. In addition, I think there are many more premium quality games that you will find out there. But remember, the statement does not mean Evoland is a bad game. But this game will only be enjoyed maximally by gamers who are familiar and very familiar with the jargon and metaphor that is closely related to video games, and requires light comedy entertainment associated with video games.
