Alienation on PS-4: Digging into my favorite character class: Bio-Specialist

in gaming •  last year

So I am STILL playing this game which is remarkable to me since I originally bagged on the game and if you read only that writeup that I did it would probably appear as though I was going to walk away from it right away as I tend to with these games that I try out that are in the PS-Plus Extra store for free.

I have been playing the game for 20 hours or so and really enjoy the time that I spend playing with my pals online. We haven't been trying to take on the hardest stuff in the game yet, but I hope that we will do so at some point in the future, even if it results in us getting wiped out many times in a row. Like I mentioned before there is no way to completely die in this game unless you are on hardcore mode and well, that seems a little too hardcore for me and outside of achievements, I can't really understand why anyone would play it.

There are 3 classes in Alienation and the one I initially started with is my favorite.

The main reason why I chose Bio-Specialist is because of the healing aspect of it. I have always enjoyed being healer classes in all the multiplayer games that I have played and it was always the class that I would choose in MMO's as well. Ok, that's not entirely true: The healing class in Final Fantasy: A realm reborn was painfully boring to play as but IMO that game straight-up sucks generally speaking.

As a Bio-Specialist you probably aren't going to have the highest damage output, that seems to be reserved, deservedly, for the Tank class. However, I find the Bio-Specialist to be the most versatile, and is probably best suited for beginners.

One of the main draws for the class is obviously the healing aspect and it doesn't just heal you, it heals everyone in your group provided they are near to you when you activate it.

My healing is fully specced out so this means that I can take the entire group from near death to full health with one usage of the skill. It does have a really long cooldown unless you find skill items in a chest but honestly, if you are taking that much damage you are probably playing on too difficult a level or you are doing something terribly wrong.

The Poison Cloud aspect is something that I like but usually will only use during "incoming Horde" situations - which become more frequent the higher level you achieve.

During a Horde Rush you will be attacked by sometimes hundreds of mutants that by themselves are not at all difficult to deal with but hey! We only have so much ammo to go around. They also follow you in a very predictable pattern in a straight line so if you activate Poison Cloud and simply run away from the horde, they will all walk through it and suicide themselves. A few other mutants will appear in front of you as well, but they can be melee attacked or pop shotted as you continue to run. Except in times of extreme panic, this is really the only time I use Poison Cloud and that's why I have only upgraded it to level 2. It does the job with all the hordes I have encountered at that level, so I see no reason to upgrade it further.

Wraiths are extremely useful and are something I use when I find myself in a rather overwhelming situations particularly with enemies at a distance.

Once activated the wraiths will leave your body and attack any enemy on the screen relentlessly. They cannot be killed and stick around for only a certain amount of time. I have this perk fully maxed out and unless it is a boss or I am currently being surrounded by a horde, they basically will take out everything on the screen. Once again, this skill has a long cooldown, so it needs to be reserved for very specific situations.

The wraiths are on autopilot and follow you so you don't need to be actively involved in their carnage at all. I suppose you just need to hope they do enough damage in a sticky situation and I use the strategy of working a way out of whatever trapped area I happen to find myself in so that if they don't do the entire job, I now have an exit strategy to retreat a bit and regroup.

I feel as though Bio-Specialist is the best one available to casual players. They have much better range than the Tank and even though the DPS isn't going to be as high as a tank in later gameplay, their survivability is much better thanks to the defensive abilities that they have as well as healing. If you are trying this game for the first time I think this is the least complicated one to master as well. I have been in groups with Tanks and Saboteurs and my survival rate is normally much better than their own. If you are playing single player, I think this is the top choice as well simply for the healing perk.
