Southpark Game on PS1 - Just terrible

in gaming •  5 years ago

There were a lot of great PS1 games and a lot of terrible ones. I would opt to say that this game was one of the worst ones. So bad, in fact, that I can't help but feel like there might have been a chance that Parker and Stone were trolling us before the internet was really a massively widespread thing.

Developed by Akklaim, this title had a decent opportunity to be a pretty great game because Akklaim was one of those companies that was very hit and miss. You had a chance at greatness or a chance at suckiness. South Park was such a massive thing back in the 90's that many of us purchased this game without even considering if it was any good.. and oh....my.....god.... was it the opposite of good.

It's a first-person-shooter (FPS) and the game gets you straight into the incredibly monotonous action right from the start where you are constantly being pursued by never-ending waves of turkeys. They are easy to kill but the sheer volume of them is just annoying as is the sound bytes of Carman saying "damn turkey!" over and over and over again.

The graphics were really bad, even by PS1 standards. The music is awful (Akklaim admitted the soundtrack was completed as a rush job because they had to work on other projects,) the voice acting actually WAS done by the correct actors but they repeat the same phrases over and over and over again. The enemy AI is really stupid - basically they just spawn and hone in on your location. There is zero difference between the 4 available characters - their attributes are exactly the same.

urgh! just awful!

Years later, Matt Stone and Trey Parker would publicly deride Akklaim for making such a terrible game for them.

Although I strongly recommend you don't do so, you can play the ROM for free here
