Warhammer: Chaosbane classes: Slayer

First off let's talk about what Warhammer: Chaosbane actually is. It is a Diablo-esque hack and slash RPG game of sorts. The game is driven by the pursuit of better loot which as you would expect gets better and better the further into the game that you go. Just like Diablo, the game doesn't rely terribly on any actual strategy and the base game is actually extremely easy to beat. The added content and online multiplayer is where the real fun and challenge lies.

The skills that each characters have, as you would expect, vary widely and there are a total of 5 classes to choose from. You just need to decide which one suits you the best. The next class we are going to look at is likely my least favorite of the original ones available in the game and this has a lot to do with the fact that he all but completely depends on close combat for damage.

Slayer

One of the major upsides of this character is that the voice acting is done really well and a bit comically as well. You can tell that "Gimli" might have been a bit of an inspiration for "Bragi Axebiter" as he refers to cutting larger enemies in half to "divide and conquer" and other such mildly humorous stuff.

Like any of the classes, there are a number of way that you can play this one but for me (and I didn't play this one to max level) I found the fact that in most situations that you have to be right next to your enemy to hurt it made the Slayer a boring and a bit arduous class to play. In certain situations there enemies are going to cause you big damage if you are right next to them and since you have to be right next to them in order to kill them, this is kind of a crap situation.

The Slayer is the only character that has a "rage gauge" and this constantly fills as he is in combat and slowly diminishes once you exit a battle. Therefore there is a bit incentive to keep moving quickly and to remain in battle at all times (which, subsequently, is not difficult to accomplish in this game as there are a ton of enemies at most times.)

His other strengths is that his attacks ignore armor and this is a big advantage over the ranged classes, particularly the Scout, where some enemies with heavy armor can take absolute ages to kill because of their armor. The Slayer makes quick work of them.

I suppose if you were going to play this character at all, you should do so as your first time through the game because once you feel the freedom that is playing as a ranged class, needing to chase down your opponents gets old, fast. There are certain ranged enemies in this game that do a good job staying just beyond your fingertips and even those these enemies are for the most part, one-hit-kill-trash mobs, chasing them down as they take pot shots at you while they are actually a teensy bit faster than you, is really annoying.

This is a pretty good video that shows Bragi's base capabilities but I don't like the way that the uploader shamelessly plugs his channel for the first half of the video only to reuse the same footage that the developers use in the 2nd part of it.

The biggest thing to remember here is that this class is probably going to be pretty boring in 1 player mode but in online multiplayer it is a pretty decent choice since you get in there and quickly kill enemies with armor that other classes will struggle with. If you are paired with a ranged player, it can be a good time because they can take out the stuff that you cant reach with your very limited range.

Warhammer: Chaosbane is frequently on sale at the PS Store, recently it was reduced to $12 or so and this price jumps up and down but since the game is a few years old, it is almost always part of the monthly sales and I think it is a good casual game to keep in your library.
