In today post, I would like to share about how to play retro games on your computer.
I love playing retro games, It brings back memories when we were little isn't it. Retro games such as Super Mario Bros. The game always has a place in my heart. I always play it and also some another retro game when I have a free time. Sometimes, when I play a retro game, it really makes me remember those sweet and sad memories that I have when I was a little. Those times when we do not have a lot of things to take care. Only care about having fun. It is nice being a kid, right?

Well, enough with that personal talk. Let's begin with the real information.

If you love playing retro games like me, there is a good news that we do not have to buy a retro device such Nintendo, Game Boy, or SEGA. We can play it with our computer. How to do it? well, there are some ways in order to play retro games on our computer. However, in today post, I would to share one of the ways, it is an emulator called OpenEmu. It is a really cool emulator for playing retro games. Let's learn a little about it.

What is OpenEmu?

OpenEmu is an emulator that we can use to play console games on a computer. What makes OpenEmu cool is, you can play a lot of different games from a different console in one place. Lists of consoles that supported by OpenEmu are Attari, Coleco Vision, Famicom, Game Boy, Nintendo, PSP, and many more. You can check this link to see more.

Unfortunately, it only supports MacOS for now. Based on their documentation, they do not plan on making it available for Windows. I really wish they also make it for Windows because I am also using Windows computer. But if you are a developer, maybe you want to contribute to port it to windows, you can go to their Github pages OpenEmu Github.

Now, if you are a Mac user, let me share you how to download and installed it.

Installing OpenEmu is very easy, you just need to download the software from their website.

1. Go to their website. or you can click here

2. Look for the button "Download Now". It is a big red button. Just click the button and OpenEmu will be download in a ZIP file.

   If you have a problem, in the yellow circle, there is a special instruction how you can run the app. Click the link to read the instruction. It is a security protocol from Apple that your Mac does not allow to run the software from an unregistered developer. Do not worry, you can still run the software, only need a bit different way from your casual one.

3. After the download finished, extract the zip file. Then, copy the content to "Application Folder".

4. Go to application folder and right click OpenEmu application, and chose open. Do not use launchpad. If you get message like this, Don't worry, just click "open"

   

5. Then, OpenEmu will be opened.

Note:

When the application open for the first time, OpenEmu will greet you with some message, Just click "next" and make sure you tick checkboxes for the console that you want to install.

Next step is, Go find ROM for the game that you want and it respected console. Just fire up Google Chrome or whatever browser do you like, go to google page and type retro games ROM. You will get a lot of results, choose whatever you like. After you download the ROM, then you only need to drag and drop to the OpenEmu emulator. One of the websites you can go for downloading the ROM is at the bottom of the article.

Now, you already installed OpenEmu, you can find ROM and it corresponding games from the internet.

Here is one of website where you can download ROM for your console.

The website called loveroms.com, you can click here to navigate to the website. In the website, on your top right corner, you will find a menu called "Roms". In the menu, you can choose the console that you want, for instance, you want to play games from Nintendo, choose "Nintendo" or you can click "view all" to see another available console. Then, you will find games that available for the corresponding console and then just download the games.

The games that you download is an archive, you need to extract it and drag the content to OpenEmu application. Then you need to wait for a moment until the ROM is loaded and you are good to go. Have fun playing your old school games and bring back those sweet old school memories. Enjoy.

Conclusion

Personally, I think this is the best emulator for Mac, Now I have a variety of consoles in one place. The only downside perhaps it is only available for Mac. I really hope someday this emulator will also support Windows.
