This is an article about RVGL: an old Re-Volt games updates
Hello steemians!
In today's article, I would like to discuss about "RVGL" it is an old Re-Volt game that has been updated and supported by fans in order to make it compatible with current system. Before we are talking about RVGL, let's bring back some memories and recall the original Re-Volt games. What is this game about? What happened to the original? why now the game supported by fans.
What is Re-Volt?
Re-volt is a game release by Acclaim Entertaiment in 1999. The game is supported for PlayStation, Nintendo 64, PC, and Dreamcast. Re-Volt is a radio control car racing theme video games. This is a racing game where the car that the player drive is a remote or radio control car. What make this game also very interesting is that it is not a usual racing game. It is added with some of cool trick to the car that the player drive. The car have some special capabilities to hinder other racer. Such as shooting rockets, dropping a metal ball, dropping lubricant oil to make other car slip and also bomb. It is really interesting. I will be discuss these capabilities in details on the next section when we talk about RVGL.

What happen to the original?
The development of the games has been stopped because the defunct of Acclaim Entertaiment company. Acclaim Entertaiment was an american video game developper company. They developed, published, market, and distribute games for a lot of platform. It is incluiding SEGA, PlayStation, GameBoy, PC, and Many more. Then, in 2004, the company is demised. There is a long story after the company is demised. The company is purchased by other and change the name to other as well. With this purchased, it also make the original revolt game stop published by Acclaim.
Supported by Fans?
With the defunct of Acclaim Entertaiment in 2004. The game have suported by many fans. The fans continue support the game by making new vehicles and courses. This new vehicles are mostly made by fans. And new feature also add such as multiplayer servers and also create a chat server in order to make players able to communicate each other, connect, and play the game online. This fan-base version of Re-volt is only maintain for PC version. What make it more insteresting now is that, the game also have been ported by fans for another PC platform such as Linux, MacOS, and OpenPandora. The game now has become opensource project.
RVGL
RVGL is an update for Re-Volt game. This update also often called Re-Volt V1.2. RVGL has been port or rewrite for cross platform that can be runned natively for both Microsoft Windows and GNU/Linux. This version is use all new and modern open source components. Open Source libarary/standard also use by this version.For the graphich, this version use modern and legacy OpenGL standard. For audio, the game use OpenAL Soft. OpenAL Soft is an independent software that use OpenAL library. Then, for input system. This version use SDL2. It support keyboard, joystick, mouse, and controller. Then, for networking, such for multiplayer support, they use ENet. You can learn more about this library from the reference below:

For and old game like this, the game is usually free, we do not need to pay anything, just find a website that provide a free download. or you can go to their original website. RVGL game has it's original website. So, to download this game, I recommend you to check this website http://rv12.revoltzone.net/rvgl.php. This is the original website of this game. Go to the website and then go to "download" page to download this game. The game will be downloaded in an archive format. Then, you only need to extract the archive and then look for the file called "rvgl.exe". Double click this file to open the game.
Now, Let's play the game

When the game load for the first time, you will be asked to input the profile name. Just input the name for whatever you like, this profile will be used for saved game. Next after you enter the profile name, You will see an menu list consist of Start Race, Best Trial, Progress Table, Options, Select Profile and Quit. To start the game, you can choose Start Race. And if you want to configure some setting, you can go to Option menu. There are many things you can configured, such as: Video setting, where you can configure the resolution of the display, Game setting, where you can configure how the game will be played, Audio setting, to set up the music, sound and volume of the game, and Controller setting, where you can configure your keyboard or controller to control the game in gameplay.
Next, to start the game, select menu Start Race. Then, you will be directed to another menu where you can choose. There are 6 type of the gameplay that the player can choose. thoose are:
- Single Race: This mode is where the player will play a single race and determined who is the winner. This mode is suitable if you want to play the game just to bring back some old memories.
- Championship: This mode is where the player need to play a series of race in order to decide who is the winner. This mode will count the point the player accquire from each game. The highest point racer will be the winner at the end of the series.
- Multiplayer: This mode is just like in another multiplayer game. The player can play with another player through network. The player can play with their friend and collegue.
- Time Trial: In this mode, there are a certain time that you need to finish you game. The player need to cross the end line in a certain period of time in order to win the game.
- Practise: Here is where you can practise your racing skills.
- Stunt Arena: This the mode where you can play in a certain arena for fun.
Next step is you will be asked to choose the dificulties level, there are 4 level in this game: Simulation, Arcade, Console and Junior. As shown in the image below:
Next step, is you need to input racer name. Just input your name. and Then you will be asked to select the car you want to drive. There are a lot of cars available. However, there are also cars that still be locked. To open this locked car, there are some requirement. For example, you need to win race in championship mode. You need to get trophy in order to open this locked car. This locked car is used for higher level in the game since the performance of this car is usually better. And next step, you will need to choose the arena of the race.
