How to Prepare for GAMSAT Biology

in gamsat •  4 years ago

Studying in preparation to sit the GAMSAT isn’t an easy thing to do, especially since it’s not always so clear where you should start. There’s a lot of content to cover, and every section has to be approached in a specific way. One of the most challenging parts of the GAMSAT exam is arguably Section 3, wherein you’ll be tasked with solving Physics, Chemistry and Biology problems.

Biology makes up forty percent of the total score available in Section 3. Therefore, it’s pivotal to ensure that you’re sufficiently prepared for GAMSAT Biology.

If you’re not sure how to start your preparation for GAMSAT Biology, don’t worry. We’ve prepared some tips here to help maximise your study.

TIP #1: GET FAMILIAR WITH GAMSAT BIOLOGY

We suggest that you start with practice questions. If you have little to know background knowledge in Biology, you may find this suggestion odd, because you’d rather start with building your background knowledge first. However, it’s actually more effective if you take a look at the questions first so you’ll have a general idea of the type of questions you’ll be expected to answer and how difficult they are.

Once you’ve got a general idea of the types of questions, you can go back to building your Biology knowledge, which leads us to our next tip.

TIP #2: BUILD YOUR BIOLOGY KNOWLEDGE

ACER suggests that in order to do well in the GAMSAT exam when it comes to Biology, you should have the background knowledge equal to a first year at a university.

Don’t panic if you’re not at this level yet, because there’s a lot of sources of information available on the internet that will help. Just make sure that you get the information from a trusted source.

TIP #3: DO PRACTICE QUESTIONS

The GAMSAT is an exam designed to test your problem solving skills, not how well you can memorise information. Therefore, it’s important that you polish your ability to implement your knowledge into problem solving skills, such as analysing the information given to you and drawing conclusions from the data.

That’s why it’s important to do practice questions, as this is the best way to polish your problem solving skills. As you get more and more familiar with the questions, you can start to time yourself. Give yourself a time limit to solve the problems, simulating the actual time limit on the exam so that you won’t be caught off guard.
