Composting Worms aka Red Wigglers

in garden •  7 years ago

Hi friends! Here's a snapshot of our red wiggler worms in our old 80 gallon compost tumbler. I feed them weekly with vegetable and fruit scraps. I avoid dairy, meat, garlic and onions. Garlic and onions have antibacterial properties and we need beneficial microbes in our worm bin to help breakdown organic matter.

We started worm farming in May 2012 with about a pound of worms in a ten gallon container. Our worm population has grown exponentially to thousands! Every now and then I add pulverized eggshells which help balance acidity within the bin. Eggshells may also aid in worm reproduction, as it is a good source of calcium. The other picture are worm egg cases or cocoons which are about the size of large pin head. They are tiny lemon shaped, yellow cocoons with at least three to five viable baby worms.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you have a great weekend! Misilla IMG_4401.PNGIMG_3309.JPG
