You can also improve the resiliance of your garden by planting the awesome duo of petunias and marigolds together throughout the beds, especially near the edges. They also make for a nice color combo.
Petunias attract many beneficial parasites and pollinators, while Marigolds are famous for driving away the unwanted pests. They also tend to grow well as companions to most vegetables and herbs.
Both grow fairly quickly - you might want to seed them inside or seed them prior to planting the rest of the beds - and actually live up to the labeled tolerance of "full sun."
Interspersing the beds with mint and other beneficial herbs will add extra protection and provide a nice source of flavor for homegrown produce.
