My Gardens at the Edge of Spring

in gardening •  4 years ago

Hello, steemies!

Spring is officially here according to the calendar, but the weather where I live is not very spring-like. We had a few days in the 40s and 50s F, but the weather has now returned to it's more seasonal 30s F in this part of the country.

While it was still nice a few days ago, I took some pictures of the gardens to share with my readers here. First, let's take a look at the garden from the beginning of March. The snow was melting with the warm-for-season weather, but it had not all melted yet.

I took this picture last week while the weather was still in the low 50s. The snow is gone from the garden, but there was still frost in the ground, especially where there's shade.

My container garden area is just about ready to finish setting up for the year. I plan on working on that once the weather gets a bit warmer again. I'm not motivated to work on it when it's in the 30s.

The small raised bed behind the containers still has the remains of last year's marigold plants. I left them there over the winter to see if they would reseed themselves. I harvested a lot of the seed pods last fall, but not all of them.

I also rent 2 garden plots at the local community garden. I drove there to get a couple of pictures for the start of this year's photo album. My 2 garden plots are in the north west corner of the community garden. They are conveniently located right next to one of the gates in the big garden fence. DSCN4352.JPG

Looking at it from the other end, you can see my small pile of compost waiting for the season to start. I also have 2 old bales of straw to use as mulch if I need it.

I also tilled up and covered a third plot last fall. The plot had not been used in last couple of years, and I want to rent it as well as my other 2 plots. A friend will be using one of my plots again this year, and I want to have more space for my own needs. I plant potatoes here because the ground is sandy and loose, and the potatoes do well in that kind of soil.

I'm going to have to till up the third plot again later this spring. The plot had not been worked in several years and it was full of grass. Grass is probably the most persistent and difficult weed to control in the garden because of it's propagation by roots. The first year in a newly dug plot takes a lot of work to control the weeds. Hopefully, the black plastic covering part of the garden plot will give me a bit of an edge on the grass this year.

That's all I have for this post, thanks for checking it out!
