The opuim poppy is the source of opuim which oozes from the unripe seed head when cut with a knife. Opuim is the source of the powerful drug morphine used to help ease extreme pain. It is the basis too far the milder painkiller codeine used in cought medicines. Opuim can also be turned into the dangerously addictive drug heroin which is why it is sometimes grown in secret in South Asia.
